RYM is a great database although the ratings/rankings + community are pretty awful tbh, you can find a lot of great s*** on there though

worst case scenario you can rely on the streaming service algorithms to shovel you new s***

    RYM is fire
Just don‘t look into RnB ratings and u straight
Also f***ed if you‘re a Drake stan lol

i was surprised to see Whole Lotta Red wasn’t bolded on there, they have Die Lit at a 3.70 and bolded instead

im assuming they didn’t like Carti’s punk/goth aesthetic on a rap album

The community back then was 95% rock elitists and they hated Wayne so u see their imprint there still lol

I think consolidation of wealth has a lot to do with this as well. Labels are giving established artists like Drake half a billion when in the past that same amount of money might have been spread around to up and comers. Putting it all in a proven commodity seems less risky to a capitalist.
From the consumer side, with concert tickets being 5-6x as expensive as they were just a few years ago, people are more likely to just go see a few really popular artists they already like as opposed to seeing smaller shows on a more frequent basis.

Which is wild cause the most the rising artists arent even expensive + do a better show.

Drake telling niggas “I wanna hear YOU sing it” meanwhile I was in a moshpit at a Paris Texas show.

it’s definitely a lot more consistent and tighter production/atmosphere wise

WLR was really damaged by its length, s*** could’ve been so much shorter

This why when niggas post my avi as a “joke” I just laugh it off cause you can’t give me 9 hip hop albums that were better than Sundial this year

there’s something to be said about the value of being impressive

all of the greats of the 2010s are impressive in various ways

nobody could write a hook like drake
nobody could tell a story like kendrick
nobody had more charisma than nicki minaj
nobody could deliver a punchline like j cole
nobody was cooler than asap rocky
nobody could build a world like childish gambino
nobody could turn the club up like future
nobody was more imaginative than young thug
nobody had more energy and color than tyler
nobody sounded bigger and more layered than travis

think about the rappers that are touted as the new superstars. do they actually impress you in any way? do they stand out above their peers? does it feel like they’re creating their own world?

if i ask you about the best rapper bar for bar, you’ll prolly say a really dope underground guy that is unsigned and doesn’t really cater to the masses. in 2011, we didn’t feel like that, and that is why hip hop is suffering. skill and being impressive is a standard that’s only upheld for the little guy.
