Jay Z is only 3 years older than Eminem yet it feels like much of his musical legacy is based on myth which is insane. None of the numbers support the high pedestal his fans try to put him on, especially in the streaming era which favors strong discographies. A house of cards legacy built on buzzwords like “culture”, “Grammys”, and “black excellence”. I guess you get to rewrite history when you’re a billionaire married to beyonce

Eminem is in the Nas lineage. It's that simple really

if these guys were going this hard for Nas, I would understand. That’s a goat who always pushed lyricism and substance when rapping. Jay was a great lyricist but he dumbed himself down to be more commercial while admitting it himself. Eminem did the opposite and was too lyrical miracle sometimes. Yet it’s his discog that people listen to more

did you not read the article? they very clearly stated that their definition of songwriting isn’t just technical lyrical capabilities.

    It's the Black Pastor/Trump effect.

Once a popular figure positions themselves as an avatar of something like success, losers will project so much of themselves onto that figure that they'll completely ignore any faults and personalize any attacks to the public figure.

    It's actually fascinating.

I've listed how Eminem is a more experimental writer with more tools to work with than Jay Z (who is brilliant at what he does, but rather one note)

Em’s writing isn’t experimental in the least

he might be the most formulaic rapper of all time, or at least neck & neck with J. Cole

relegating “culture” and “black excellence” to “buzzwords” as a non-black person isn’t a little strange to you?

Black excellence is ENTIRELY a buzzword Jay Z used until he didn't need it any more

Because anyone who applies chart sales as the end all be all of ranking any rapper, especially one who came before the streaming era, is extremely ill informed and showing their ass

You did this in the last jay z thread and wanted people to take you seriously

This is why I keep saying you struggle with comprehension.

There are things you can quantify, and things you can't.

You can attempt to quantify things like impact with numbers (which is probably the only objective way to). You can't quantify things like lyricism, songwriting, or preference which is why it's a subjective debate.

Have I brought up numbers in this thread?

    of course i have

all formulaic nonsense in their own ways

i understand having an attachment to Eminem because your white parents said he seemed like a “safe” rapper when you were 9, but there comes a time in every Em fan’s life when you realize Royce was better in every way, and Royce isn’t even a top 20 rapper.

Do you know what formulaic means?

There's not a speck of Caucasian DNA in my blood but go off I guess

you have Kanye’s dropout bear as your avi, Chief Keef as your username, and you’re an Eminem stan in 2026. you’re not convincing anyone you aren’t white.

No, no one had a problem with you quantifying numbers/sales. The point is using that quantification to prove X or Y is better, nevermind the fact you made zero distinction between how charts worked pre-streaming and post, meaning you did the most barebones, vulgar “analysis and quantification” of data possible

Just looking at raw numbers from an album sold in 1985 vs an album sold in 2025 is ed without obviously qualifying the major differences in how streams/albums are counted.

    This is pretty basic stuff
