Eminem produces, does voices, adds background noises, is generally better at storytelling.

How is he not a better songwriter?

Most of Eminem's output from 2004 to now is bad music

Eminem doesn't write great songs anymore and he hasn't in almost two decades

    And I'm the troll

So from his entire career you can’t quote 3 hard bars from the self proclaimed rap god?

Ignoring how silly that statement is... you know what, let's actually get into it.

    What is "bad music"?

What is a good song, and what do you know about song structure?

Reminder that op once said they know if an album is good or bad without even listening because they look at the sales

There has never been a moment in history where Eminem was a better songwriter than Jay Z.

  • Eminem was at one point a stronger technical rapper than Jay, but in terms of actual lyricism Jay Z has always been superior to Eminem. Em is just flashier, and was at one point a good songwriter, just wasn't Jay-tier.

  • Em put out way too many bad albums post encore

  • I'm also pretty apathetic on Jay being the greatest songwriter in hip hop. There are a lot of people who are eligible for that spot, but Jay is also one of those people. A very obvious pick that may have been the result of a favor Jay called in at NYT, but it's also a completely fair distinction to give him.

Denying Jay as being in the GOAT-tier of rap songwriters, like the single GOAT in all of the genre, is like denying Tom Brady being a GOAT-tier football player because he's a media staple and corporate cash cow. Two things can be true at once, Jay is a bit overhyped in the media and is also far and away one of the greatest songwriters in human history.

Eminem was a better songwriter than Jay Z when he was writing Stan and Lose Yourself, and when he was writing Darkess and Arose

Stan is a masterpiece and denying that even as someone who doesn't bump Eminem is just very corny and tryhard.

Aside from that, there are entire albums worth of songs Jay has written that are better written than "Lose Yourself". Great track but come on man it's maudlin as f***. "Regrets", "You Must Love Me", and "December 4th" are just a few songs that have better songwriting than Lose Yourself.

4:44 is better written from the top down than any single Eminem song from 2010 onward aside from "Bad Guy" lol

Man said Lose Yourself is maudlin then brought up Regrets.

    I actually lol'd.

Jay Z is a one-dimensional songwriter, paints absolutely beautiful images with his lyrics... problem is Eminem got bored with that around TES and has consistently experimented with how he approaches his songwriting since

Oftentimes to actual deleterious effects when he goes too hard on his technical s***.

He had the syllable splitting, hyper-enuciating phase around Recovery to MMLP2

Did the whole URL wordplay thing/the doubletime thing somewhere between Revival and Kamikaze

Did the whole acapella freestyle syllable counting thing

He's more experimental, has more tools in his arsenal: singing (badly), producing, environmental sounds, even rapping on a wider range of production.

Jay Z is only 3 years older than Eminem yet it feels like much of his musical legacy is based on myth which is insane. None of the numbers support the high pedestal his fans try to put him on, especially in the streaming era which favors strong discographies. A house of cards legacy built on buzzwords like “culture”, “Grammys”, and “black excellence”. I guess you get to rewrite history when you’re a billionaire married to beyonce

Yes and how much people listen to your music is important. Hence legacy based on myth
