I think an audience of men would watch Sylvester Stallone or Arnie be glistening beefcakes and regard their aesthetics objectively, but not sexually. At least not consciously.

With women, they can't appreciate the aesthetic without acknowledging the sexuality, and that feels like a contaminant.

So a "purely aesthetic appeal" will always be the realm of the male.

i dont disagree fully, but people are watching Stallone in the context of a journey where they feel the aesthetic fits the role. Dudes arent just watching 30 min videos of Stallone working out. Films like Rocky embody values of the Hero's Journey (very literally there since tahts what the film is based around lol) and having a super fit hyper-masculine dude simply fits the typecast of the role. You could even say this about something like Fight Club (the movie); people are willing to disregard all the homoerotic elements of it because of the implied values of the protagonist. Stallone isn't really the "product", he's part of the product. Most male s***symbols (say, idk, Elvis Presley historically) dont just exist in a vacuum - Elvis being a s***symbol was part of a larger act which cross-informed each other.
When it comes to women, that isnt always true unless they actively go out of their way to differentiate themselves (which is very hard) - they are essentially the product in and of themselves

I remember just ten years ago it was kinda cringe to even bring up numbers, because it was supposed to be the art we were discussing.

Now it’s like the starting point of conversation for any release. You have kids, fifteen year old children a***yzing streaming numbers of all things and taking all that manipulation and f***ery at face value. The naivety of it all. It’s amazing.

No, I don't think men are disregarding those homoerotic things.

I think they are too repressed to admit what they are. Biggie's deep voice is just "cool" to a guy. It might be "sexy" to a girl. 50 Cent looking good in a wife beater is "cool" to a guy. It might be "sexy" to a girl. Both are hitting on the same aesthetic appreciation; one is just conscious of its sexual nature or application.

For instance, Susan Boyle absolutely fit the hero's journey you are talking about. People were impressed someone so ugly could sing. They aren't impressed when a hot person can sing. So we agree that far. But the only difference is the sexual attraction for the male audience. That's the only thing making her story appealing. The lack of contaminant. It's all pure ability to them.

that’s actually an excellent point with the Fight Club s***. that could also be why some of these niggas romanticize and fetishize the Greeks/Romans while brazenly looking over the rampant homosexuality and affinity for pederasty during that time that’s extremely well documented and literally available at a cursory Google lmao

i think it’s also worthy to note that men are able to vicariously live through these men or even see them as ideals to aspire towards, while women are seen as a prize and/or an addition to a man’s stature most of the time so roughly really, it’s essentially a “he’s just like me fr” from man to man, while women are relegated to being objects

Well I mean I think they're disregarding it in the sense that its not the sole reason they're enjoying it. There's an element of projection I think more than there's an element of repression. Men might be conscious of sexual nature w other men but the way it informs opinion is a lot more jointed than it is direct. Of course this isn't to play into any like gender wars stuff, its more of a commentary on how people are socialized to begin with and what elements they do/don't pick up on. There are differences in socialization (good or bad) and that obv informs significantly consumption as well as typecasting of others. You're right that men may interpret what women interpret as a comparable inverse, but im talking mostly about male consumption of male celebrity vs male consumption of female celebrity. Take someone like Joe Rogan, even the people who think hes the defintiion of cool arent fixating on his appearance as his worth, they're looking at that as complementary to him as a podcaster/father figure (lol i know but still, very true for a lot of people)/etc - they may realize on some level the fact that he looks a certain way may be appealing to the other s***which may inform on some level projecting themselves onto them, but thats less about the consumption and more of just a recognition of sexual dynamics
I do agree with you of course about Susan Boyle - but you get that's what I mean right, like you even said it yourself, people were impressed by her specifically because she wasn't attractive but was talented (thus differentiating herself from innate sexual expectation). Thus they were like "wow this ugly woman actually brings value to society??" - this wouldn't happen w a hot singer because as you say the default assumption is she already has value intrinsically. However this is also why discourse about female artists leads to focusing on aesthetic; it is essentially the main default axis for assumption whereas for men, not that it doesnt matter, but its essentially complementary.

This is a wild ass post tbh.
General qualities that lead to a more captivating figure/ leader type like aeshetics of voice or form isn't automatic sexual repression.

    Real

The song isnt bad at all.

  • Jun 17, 2023

the song is cool. "ok that's cute". calm intro to her new era, nice kiss off to the haters. this more of an album cut than a lead, but it gets a lot off her chest (literally), so I like it for a first look into her new era. liked this rapping better than kill bill, that s*** was wack ngl.

video is cool too, nicely done. as if to say she's living life as her full self while everybody hides behind a mask (or their twitter acc). she look good as f*** too. take the pain away, that's a perky set

of course stan twt would be expecting some boom bap s*** to compete with gunna or compete at all. this a album cut that will do solid off name alone. not that deep to say flop or fall off lol.

I don't think all the music is gonna sounds like this, so I won't write this off, but not all that interested in this sound for an album tbh. I also hate when artists switch their sound to some artsy fartsy s*** and disown their previous work like this the holy grail for them now, her & yachty annoy me a little in that way. like bffr.
