That’s cool you’ve gotten to know Ezra I really like his podcast time crisis and gotten to have a couple convos with him he’s a cool dude. For someone who has some good ideas and want to get into screenwriting, what are some good tools to help get started and learn the basics.
I'm a huge fan of Ezra and VW. To me, they have the strongest catalog of any artist in the 2005 - present era. The the story of how they got on my radar is funny
The Harvard Lampoon invites celebrities to make them "honorary members." Someone invited VW and they hung out at the Lampoon for a while. They weren't much older than the seniors,
I'd never heard of them and thought they were some small time band. They invited us to their show, which was at a decent venue (HOB maybe). not huge, but big enough that in retrospect that's when I should have known they were big
after they left, I checked out their music and realized they had the #1 album in the country. I bumped into him outside Ralph's in Beverly HIlls years later and we exchanged info. Haven't talked to him in a while, but he's dope. Listened to a ton of Time Crisis in 2019
To answer your question, read Save the Cat, then read Elephant Bucks
Lindsey pleas follows you what the f*** that’s the greatest credit of them all
a lot of random people I met in "the industry" do. the most random is probably Chloe & Halle. Daniel Caesar briefly did, and then he must have soon realized I did not deserve the honor
Is making short films a good path to go on too?
to become a filmmaker maybe. but it's not the 90's. everything is a superhero movie. I'd say if you're going to shoot something, make it a teaser trailer. not to toot my own horn, but something like this:

No lie this is a high key sus response bro…
it's hard enough to get your own idea made, let alone someone else's
Lmao you know how many ideas get snatched from forums like reddit? Lmao I guaranteed filmmakers be browsing through the “Logline Monday’s” threads just to find ideas
I really doubt it. maybe filmmakers I guess. but even then, the idea itself is such a small part of something. squid games took forever to get approved
for tv especially this fear is overblown. what sells on TV is basing something on your own life. black-ish, the goldbergs, insecure, everybody hates chris, fresh off the boat, etc.
Now that I'm almost done with season 1, I can say the answer to your question is Succession. Aside from The Simpsons which I think is the best job in TV and one of the best jobs in jobs
Good pick. Get your agent to contact Jesse Armstrong asap
it's hard enough to get your own idea made, let alone someone else's
also @twitch if you think there's rampant theft, emailing is better than posting in a forum. with email, you have a record in your outbox and servers log when the recipient opens a message or downloads a attachment
on a public forum, stuff can get deleted out of your control. and the plagiarist has plausible deniability that he / she didn't see it on the forum
when you submit stuff to a show (SNL for example) or to a producer, you tend to have to sign something that protects them in case they do something similar to whatever you wrote
because often great minds think alike and they might honestly have never read your submission and still do a sketch that's similar and now you're certain they stole it when they didn't
I meant I wouldn't ask someone to sign something because I'm a relative nobody

!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1PaYSwdPEIBut what if you aren’t looking to do superhero s***. More so independent filmmaker (writer/director) along the lines of a Sean Baker or Safdie bros
I’ve been told that doing short films is a great way to showcase your vision and then try and get into festivals.
I’ve read how there’s different options as far as being independent goes: festivals, seek agent, blacklist, script competitions, etc. Not sure if all those avenues are realistic or if s*** really is based on Harvard or whatever y’all been talking about in here lol

I mean there are tons of people in the industry who didn't go to college, let alone to Harvard. also Harvard is more TV than film
you should really disabuse yourself of the notion that people are trying to steal your idea. not sharing your idea because you think it'll get stolen is a really good way to prevent yourself from getting helpful feedback
although to be fair, I've stolen and sold like 3 ideas from this thread in the past 36 hours and am literally bathing in the money from them like Scrooge McDuck
I think for film, the best thing you can do is write an amazing, tight script. then the second best is to shoot a scene from it or shoot a teaser trailer for it and upload it to YouTube or kickstarter. also maybe get local actors together to do a table read and invite friends / family / homeless people / literally anyone
it's hard enough to get your own idea made, let alone someone else's
You ever heard of the writers boot camp ran by Jeff Gordon? They’re a writing mentorship coaching type company. Their past clients list is pretty impressive, writers who have gone on to write on shows, feature films, won Oscars, etc.

Lmao I’m not against sharing ideas, but that’s more so in 1 on 1 settings or amongst a group of ppl tryna help. I don’t see how it’s beneficial to just post s*** on Reddit for anyone to see. Not everyone has good feedback. A nigga like Tarantino could read that s*** and it’s game over for you

no, but I know of similar things. a boot camp or diversity program is a good way in. most major studios / networks have them for black, Latino, LGBTQ but it's way more competitive than getting into a top college if I remember correctly
anyway if there is enough interest, like 10+ people or so then I can do a zoom or twitch and answer these and other questions live. probably a twitch
maybe I'll pick a lucky attendee to have a 1 on 1 with their favorite artist, provided I know them

I hear you, but the script matters more than the broad idea. what is someone really gonna do with a logline. as long as you're not giving away the plot beat by beat, I really don't see the issue

Word ok. I’m currently in that one right now so I take it that’s a good thing? They did a whole interview process and everything and I got accepted in.
But yeah when you thinking of doing the live? I’m sure at least 10 in here down
blacklist and script competitions are an absolute joke
I swear I’ve seen you say this before? I don’t see how? I’ve seen so many blacklist scripts end up produced and at Sundance

Just to be clear I’m not registered on blacklist but I do see that there is options.
But yeah I’d rather do the short film route because I wanna direct my films too. Blacklist seems to be more so for writers looking for directors and s***.

lol I think you're both right, but @KAYTRANADA is right-er (I think)
there is a sort of "industry plant" version of film / tv where you read a story about how some script got plucked from obscurity (usually bc someone spotted it on the blacklist) and then you realize the writer was repped or their dad or uncle was somebody
I think the blacklist used to me more meritocratic, but like all successful things, once it became a moneymaker, it became more competitive to get on it, and competition means that those who succeed will be the ones with more resources and structural advantages
