But I fail to see how serving all those different audiences with one project isn’t a risk in itself. Who else can do that and still have people say that the album is too safe?

Hikaru Utada just dropped BAD MODE tonight and that s*** is so well done but if I had to justify it on here you would think the only way I could is if it went no.1 in America first week and beat everyone else’s faves.

But you said it yourself, you can’t compare it to the sales climate of today.
Her physical sales only were higher then a lot of artist’s streaming sales. And physicals count a lot more then streaming.

Those spots have to be filled. My point is those songs did not have a fair chance to compete with BL. Artist basically just had to send a social media post for promo and that’s it. Weeknd had his full promo going for AH leading up to February when the pandemic started. Other artist that year did not have the benefit to gain traction in album promo or tour promotion. A lot of heavy hitters decided not to drop because of that.
To use Drake as an example, that’s why he decided to drop an album full of loosies instead of a full album release like CLB.
it’s no coincidence the only other memorable hit that year was Life Is Good. Which also dropped before the pandemic.
