When folks praise an athlete as a great overall player, saying that this guy does x better or that guy does y better makes you sound silly.
Yeah I prefer "as well as blank" over "better than blank"

Jamming that Purity Ring debut for the first time in years. I forgot how dope it is
That’s another thing I never understood about his critiques. Him acting as if studio “trickery” as he puts it somehow takes away from the quality of the finished piece. It’s the same weird argument towards a film when they’ll say “it was saved in editing”. It’s like that’s how movies work lol.
How dare you use the technology in the studio to improve your music

He contradicts his own statement about their lack of innovation with his own scores. 7/10 is good but I assume scruffi would rather give George Martin the credit than the actual Beatles
guy doesn't give out scores just based on innovation. It definitely plays a factor but that's not necessarily it (see the review of Goat's World Music scaruffi.com/vol8/goat.html ):
"The music is certainly outdated, even produced according to poor quality values to sound like it would have in the 1960s, but back then this would have been a milestone recording. "
Then again, he considers them as simply not that innovative and extremely overrated. That text is often very polemic tbqh.
For example, he considers The Beatles the best band of 1962 and cites John Lennon as best composer of 1964 (Ray Davies for 1965 respectively) ( scaruffi.com/music/best.html ), while also including a few of their songs among the best rock songs of all time. His major gripe is that 60s music expanded far beyond that format rather quickly.
Man alcohol used to make me happy, now I want to blow my brains out
