Destroy Lonely and Yeat are just not that good or engaging yall lmao
That's what I'm saying. The new generation of rappers today are just not as interesting as the ones that came about in that previous wave
Well that’s pretty much all form of news now. Social Media is your newspaper/TV a lot of the time.
i'm just old school in that sense razor, i like to hear/see breaking news from traditional mediums you feel me? there's even an oversaturation of culture news outlets on twitter. it's tiring.
It is progressive and a great album, but in terms of this thread, is Kendrick keeping rap at the forefront in any way by dropping every 5 years? I doubt he cares anyway
But to try and shift the blame to someone like Drake who's actively dropping music every year, over a decade into his career is crazy
Artists like that are ones who keep this s*** interesting, not artists like Kendrick and Frank
If you keep dropping the same thing every year, are you honestly actively pushing the genre forward? Like if Ye made CD from 04-2010, are you saying that he’s actively not part of the issue?
Nah the 2000's had a dark period bro. The whole "ringtone era" was considered the death of hip hop too

did you forget about this album? History is repeating itself
Nas himself say he missed the mark saying this lol.
And this didn't really do anything. Plus rappers were still being successful and had #1s
Niggas. aint. doing. that. or. selling. out. all. their. shows.
ah man, those mtv spring break shows....and the infamous rap city
this wasn't the peak of rap city, but it was nice to see this every day 4pm

If he got bored of 106,he'd throw on a mixtape, one of the reasons i know so much street music now. He played alot of Wayne,Gucci,Jeezy,Plies,T.I. etc.
Nowadays,my barber just turns on CNN or whatever,SMH
Another thing that needs to be factored in is, again, Gen Z born males are the first gen of core hiphop listeners that don’t look at the generation defining crossover mcs as their cool idols to aspire to
They don’t wanna be Drake and Kendrick or even Cole. But you bet your ass Drake and Kendrick and Cole wanted to be Wayne and Hov and whoever else. Pac wanted to be Cube. Em wanted to be Pac. It’s not a coincidence the girlies wanna be like Nicki tho and they’re the newest rappers that are actually making a stamp
Bro we got DMX and Em right outta the deaths of what was essentially that gen’s Drake in two guys, but three rookies single-handedly stopped the progress of mainstream rap flourishing for the next years to come?
Y’all better hope that s*** ain’t true cause it paints a grim portrait of the state of mainstream rap if it is lmao
Hip hop was building back up after those deaths imo, but street rap was at the forefront. Most of the potential street rap stars from 2019-2023 are either locked up or dead right now

That was Nas talking about his feelings on the quality of the music this era the quality AND the sales are dead.

i would LOVE for BET to release every full episode of rap city and 106. from countdowns to performances to interviews on both shows. i love watching interviews on rap city, i've watched the booth freestyles to death

Can we please stop pretending like Kendrick takes 5 years to drop every time. That was one time where a pandemic happened, the nigga had two kids and got married.
Y’all always do this without context. And no Drake dropping every year doesn’t do more to keep anything alive. He adds to the monotony that is rap.
Dropping every year and adding nothing new isn’t helping the genre.
And yes when D angelo drops in ten years it will be more impactful musically than whatever Drake has been doing. I’m not too sure how you can even refute this.
if they had kendrick/drake level artistry they wouldn't have been signed.
they would be signed if the drake and kendrick level artists were signing them (not a shot at the guys they are signing btw)
when you look at the greats of the last generation, nearly all of them were signed or backed in some capacity by a previous great.
drake - wayne
nicki - wayne
j cole - jay z
kendrick - dr dre
travis - TI and kanye
big sean - kanye
tyler - (he was already on XL but apparently jay z and puff wanted him. also had a major kanye co-sign as soon as yonkers dropped)
a few guys like rocky and mac miller were the outliers. i think in the present era we don’t speak about how necessary and valuable those co-signs are. cause honestly, i trust a great artists ear more than a suit. last era proved that we all should.
This is what I mean y'all are so desperate for s*** to he the same as it always was you're not paying attention.
Nas said Hip Hop was dead cause of how it sounded but the genre itself was still dominating hugely.
Hip Hop isn't anymore and is slowly losing its grip
cuz he's cringe and corny and he knows regardless of how s***ty his new music, it'll get clicks on streaming services cuz he prolly has them on payroll
You don’t even believe that lol

I just want the master tapes of the booth freestyles, maybe the mater tapes of those 106 freestyle battles too lol
Talking to rap fans right now about rap numbers is like talking to Trump supporters about his arrest
If you keep dropping the same thing every year, are you honestly actively pushing the genre forward? Like if Ye made CD from 04-2010, are you saying that he’s actively not part of the issue?
Drake dropped Dark Lane, HNVM and Her Loss all in a 3 year span. I wouldn't say these sound identical at all.
I don't think Kanye is the accurate comparison for Drake either. Jay would be more of his equivalent. Kanye is more producer minded so he's always had the skill of creating a new sound for each of his albums

said this in another thread the big 3 basically being like "nah" plays a part in this too.
Cole for his sake is trying with the label.

But the whole "hip hop is dead" agenda was getting pushed around media just like it is right now. It wasn't considered back to life until Wayne had his run

bring up tours not selling you get the biggest amount of copium.
for all the talks about the mid 2000s with the crunk and fruityloop beats, idk about y'all but i'd prefer listening to those ringtone era songs over the soulless and cookie cutter trap music from this era.
at least the music then was considered fun, and lil jon's beats just hit different.
