but labels weren’t giving up on hip hop in 2011. they were signing tyler, rocky, mac miller, kendrick etc
from a major label perspective, kanye + hov, drake, wayne, j cole, the game etc were releasing commercially successful, well received albums. that’s not mentioning all the underground indie classics that we had in the genre.
we’re in a much worse place than we were in 2011 not just musically, but also with infrastructure at labels, media etc.
Hopefully it will cause more artists to succeed independently which is now more important than ever
To do that they’ll have to make original music with personality
I don’t see it as a bad thing ofc I don’t want rappers getting f***ed but they were getting screwed by label deals when hip hop was at a commercial peak too

POOM POOM DOOMThis is another HOT TAKE that I have: Part of the reason why it seems like women are taking over is because none of the "big names" are experimenting compared to their male contemporaries.
They're mostly making outside/booty shaking music, using conventional rap flows and rapping over conventional rap beats (not that I consider that to be bad thing).
There isn't really a lot of BIG weirdo/alternative rappers in the female space. Outside of Doja Cat of course, if she even counts.
No one cared about Tierra Whack enough. Azealia Banks is a hot mess. Rico Nasty just put out a tweet saying she'll be working at Burger King in five years.
TiaCorine has one TikTok hit. Princess Nokia was selling feet pics on onlyfans before she got her Tik Tok hit.
Leikeli47 disappeared for awhile too. All the super creative women making the most interesting music, even when it leans towards just being fun, get fed up with the s*** n bounce and find something else to do. Praying Little Simz sticks with us

But no i wouldn't call him a mainstream rapper like a mainstream rapper to me is someone in the mainstream outside of Hip Hop people can recognize.
French had a Diamond song with Swae Lee who I can argue is not mainstream based on your definition.

Introducing any new act is going to be hard as s*** borderline impossible, no matter how good the artistry is, IMO.

yeah people don’t buy records anymore but they’ll stream it if they enjoy it. they’ll buy tickets to your show if they’re affordable. and they’ll buy into you as an artist if you’re marketed well.
i think we’ve seen a lot of artists create subpar work, with a subpar story behind it, have subpar performances and then we start thinking that the subpar reaction they get will be the same reaction something that’s exceptional would get, but that just isn’t the case.

Drake dropped Dark Lane, HNVM and Her Loss all in a 3 year span. I wouldn't say these sound identical at all.
I don't think Kanye is the accurate comparison for Drake either. Jay would be more of his equivalent. Kanye is more producer minded so he's always had the skill of creating a new sound for each of his albums
Drake is talking about the same thing on all of those albums bro. HNVM was a rare gem but I wouldn’t call that a rap album. Her Loss and Dark Lane have a lot of similarities and they are not THAT different from each other.
