ah man, those mtv spring break shows....and the infamous rap city

    and ofc this classic

The mid to late 2000s when that happened, Lil Jon era, the snap / crunk music from the south

The 2000s really went through a downwards spiral outside of Kanye and Wayne and a few others, it's actually pretty similar to whats going on right now

This again is cope because even that mid era Kanye and 50 were still huge and Wayne would slide into Carter 3 for an all time run.

The mid 2000s era of Hip Hop was bigger then this current era

I don’t care about numbers. Did Madvillainy get the same acclaim and attention in 2004? No

Then it's going to go back to being an underground genre. Which could potentially be a good thing

Bro we got DMX and Em right outta the deaths of what was essentially that gen’s Drake in two guys, but three rookies single-handedly stopped the progress of mainstream rap flourishing for the next years to come?

Y’all better hope that s*** ain’t true cause it paints a grim portrait of the state of mainstream rap if it is lmao

Yes it was bigger, you're proving my point lol. It's harder these days to even think about having superstars at the level of Kanye and Wayne.

S*** is never happening in today's era.

And still, 2000s was thought of to be a weak era especially after 90s rap

No, it’s just not appreciated NOW but it will be when the tide changes. We’ve seen this with tons of albums we call classics nowadays. My point stands that it is a progressive body of work for the genre instead of the majority of s*** that comes out now

Well that’s pretty much all form of news now. Social Media is your newspaper/TV a lot of the time.

I mean, it's still largely up for debate if those acts would have become superstar touring acts though. Like it' one thing to say they were heading for stardom, it's another to suggest that they'd be selling 300k first week. Idk

Not saying it couldn't have happened though. They had momentum.

X was already doing 130k first week within a year of mainstream success and Juice WRLD sold 160k first week after about a year in as well. In comparison, Destroy Lonely and Yeat who are the biggest in this new wave can barely crack 30-60k first week after over a year in the spotlight

Nah the 2000's had a dark period bro. The whole "ringtone era" was considered the death of hip hop too

Another thing that needs to be factored in is, again, Gen Z born males are the first gen of core hiphop listeners that don’t look at the generation defining crossover mcs as their cool idols to aspire to

They don’t wanna be Drake and Kendrick or even Cole. But you bet your ass Drake and Kendrick and Cole wanted to be Wayne and Hov and whoever else. Pac wanted to be Cube. Em wanted to be Pac. It’s not a coincidence the girlies wanna be like Nicki tho and they’re the newest rappers that are actually making a stamp

It is progressive and a great album, but in terms of this thread, is Kendrick keeping rap at the forefront in any way by dropping every 5 years? I doubt he cares anyway

But to try and shift the blame to someone like Drake who's actively dropping music every year, over a decade into his career is crazy

Artists like that are ones who keep this s*** interesting, not artists like Kendrick and Frank
