i think the only time drake was able to make a song like that was with sandras rose but to a lesser degree

songs like champagne poetry are some of his best rapping/skills wise and i guess are closer to being introspective/deeper then most of his discog but when i say introspective i mean s*** that comments on the culture/current issues/his personal struggles or fears.

kdot does it with songs like fear and mortal man, cole does it with songs like 4yeo and false prophets, erykah badu did it on songs like A:D 2000, and lauryn hill did it on most of her MTV unplugged album (biggest example being I Gotta Find Peace of Mind)

seems like drake doesn't have the ability to think that far outside himself or he pretends to do so for commercial success which makes it hard for me to consider him one of the goats even tho hes one of my most listened to

nearly all the goats in HH so far have been able to both make introspective music and commercial hits

most of the greats got 4-5 of those tracks if not more

kdot got fear, duckworth, U, mortal man, sing about me, poe mans dream etc but most of the other greats im talking about have a similar amount of em if not more

not talking about the fake deep relationship cuts he makes even tho they r some of his best sounding songs

I think you might be confusing/conflating introspection with social commentary

So you’re talking about social commentary? You’re asking for introspection which the definition is going inside yourself basically, but you’re saying that drake should actually go outside himself to make introspective stuff which don’t make sense

yeah i was misusing them my bad, but even talking about introspective tracks i think drake only has 1-2 of those, with the rest being kind of fake/hollow

most of the time hes talking about himself and his experiences its really boring and just repeating that hurt playboy character

Some stories you can only tell once. I did really enjoy his lyrics touching on his parents divorce on Champagne Poetry though I felt like that was pretty poignant

But you know what they say, for your first couple albums you’re drawing off of 20 something years of life experience. After you touch on all that, you’re more taking it year by year. And the life of the rich and famous might not always hit on that same emotional level that the origin stories do

But neither here nor there because that poster itt wasn’t even saying drake doesn’t do it anymore, they were saying drake isn’t capable of introspection period

It’s interesting though because on the title track of Views he says “I’d share more of my story but y’all wouldn’t believe it / It’s far fetched like I threw that s*** a hundred meters”, and then on 4PM in Calabasas he says “I tell y’all my life and y’all don’t believe me when I say it / Save my stories for down the line”

But he hasn’t really gone more in depth on anything since those two songs came out

But to answer your original question drake is very capable of it. Look What You’ve Done hits me harder emotionally than any Kendrick song

my whole point is that the greats can do both. none of the people i mentioned in the goat category only makes serious music, they all have made hits and hype music

hes almost 40, id expect him to have more to speak on at this point of his career tbh.

his whole appeal in the beginning was that his personal issues were far beyond his years, making them alot more interesting and impressive ("23 and going thru a mid life crisis")

now it just seems like he stagnated in terms of what hes talking about in his music. im not that surprised seeing as hes still caught up with surrounding himself with the bs of someone in his 20s (if u listened to the guests he had on his Table For One for Her Loss you def know what i mean). I just have higher standards/expectations for his writing at this point

Kendrick falls very short in the fun listenable music department. Both could probably benefit from a better balance tbh.

They kind of have opposite strengths in a way

But Look What You’ve Done as an introspective joint is better than Swimming Pools as a crossover

So for me drake is closer to doing both than kendrick
