Man this isn’t 1996 we’re not booing Outkast anymore I promise lmao
500 shows in the last 4-5 years and haven’t seen a single act booed
Idk, I'm not from there, but this is still a large sentiment with artists I've in sessions with and it still happens from time to time
It's happened with a band and another DJ not too long too although idk who they are personally, and artists talk about in interviews to this day about how nervous they are to perform in NY for their first real time due to the reputation
My point of saying that tho in that comment is that you shouldn't be surprised to be boo'ed in NY if you go all the way left for what the audience in NY is there for of all places - and the 3 places he called out - NYC, LA & Berlin, are all known for booing more than most if all cities to this day in many genres from underground to mainstream (and to my understanding it's even worst in more niche spaces)
It wasn't a shot at NYC itself, it was a shot at his ignorance and doing everything possible to be an a****** and ruin the event, in a place that is "known" to boo, and then be mad n surprised he got booed
it's not the fact that it's diatonic by itself, it's that as a result of that all the songwriting tends to sound the same, which is a common problem with contemporary "experimental" music really especially when you transition to a very conventional style it becomes obvious. harmonically conventional music without other cool ideas/production to dress it up=boring ass "diatonic" music which isn't even a proper term and i kind of regret using it in the first place because it's a sloppy way of putting it but gets across what im trying to say. if you took anything off safe in the hands and gave it generic trap production no one would care about these songs. when you transition into a conventional style and don't have anything else like actually great musicianship or inventive or interesting songwriting to fill the void the experimentalism left behind, you get a guy posing as avant garde but making what amounts to again, badly sung light rock. his lyricism is nothing special either for that matter so there's nothing there that can replace that.
another reason that i pointed out how it's diatonic is because in order to do rock/pop soul/emo right in a way that actually makes it interesting you need to experiment in the songwriting department. it wasn't as important when they were making music that was actually interesting and boundary pushing in other ways, because quite a few of those songs are pretty "diatonic" as well, even ones with otherwise crazy awesome production and other ideas. that's not a problem IN AND OF ITSELF, i like plenty of music that stays completely within a given western major or minor scale.
but when you shed all that to do standard radio fare, im assuming you're gonna find a way to make that interesting too. but they don't, not to me anyway, or at least not nearly as interesting as their previous material. it's not the fact that they "sold out", i have no problem with pop music, I loved a lot of songs off bieber's album swag that just dropped. it's the fact that they went from what they were previously making to mostly standard stuff without bringing anything really all that new to that new conversation they entered, basically aside from aesthetically being queer david bowie updated to the 21st century, and for me aesthetics/the intentional juxtaposition of their avant-garde image with mostly standard rock isn't interesting to me. it's the same reason i don't care for a lot of rock out there to begin with: literally all style, no substance.
you find parts of it boring for how sample heavy it is, i find it boring for the reasons stated above. maybe learn how to handle someone else's opinion of something you like without having an angry reflexive reactionary tribalistic insult spasm. but even going off your vehement defense you basically also admit his music is more conventional than it's ever been, so i digress.
it's not that im trying to sound smart, it's that you can't fathom someone having different taste from you and talking about music in different ways from you. didn't take you for such a close minded weirdo but go off. if someone expressing their opinion really "hurts" you maybe you should consider idk going outside and touching grass maybe?
also you mfs keep saying "solid" see my post above for my thoughts on that but idc whether music is "solid" i care whether it's interesting or speaks to me or not
diatonic was a poor argument and i’m not a stan, i just think it’s corny to undermine all the artistic merit of a unique album that blends his avant garde sampling sensibilities with a cast of outstanding studio musicians and a producer/engineer that understands his glam rock sound
i just can’t understand how ur a prince fan and completely spell out glam rock as a genre with any artistic value, it feels disingenuous and like you’re more worried about making a statement than engaging deeply with the music. the horns on gospel, the solo on kerosene, the bass line on strawberry
i don’t understand how u can argue it’s a lesser album than his previous warp release just bc it’s diatonic. it’s a poor argument
i can’t apologize for riding for HTTM s*** is probably the best balance between avant sensibilities with strong hooks i’ve heard in a minute. he’s a poor vocalist live but the records make good use of his unique tone
i’m with u 100%
Yeah he just came off to be really an a****** in the set and totally off
But also he hating NYC, LA & Berlin cities pointing them out specifically that are known to artists to be "difficult" to perform in also tells me he's kinda a baby tbh - compounded with how he acted in the hotel/greenroom

so you didn't understand my argument at all and it sounds like you didn't even read what i said, that's interesting. me expressing an opinion on music i don't like is not "undermining" that's insane, again, you sound like a stan. especially because now again you are talking about it like it's a car or a product. "all these professionals are involved, it must be good!" ok, but it isn't good to me, or at least i don't find it that interesting compared to his previous material, and all those people who otherwise might make really good stuff being involved makes no difference, and you're talking past me whereas i just tried to explain my point of view to you, which i shouldn't even have bothered doing because you came out the gate insulting me for an opinion.
prince fan=must appreciate glam rock
prince is not really considered "glam" by any metric i've ever seen but i probably should've been clearer. i know glam can also refer to stuff like david bowie but i came to understand it as also including "hair metal" type s*** like poison or foreigner, metal not really being accurate so basically "hair rock". basically very conventional rock with the crazy image of s*** like kiss, ie you look at them and you think they make kvlt black metal but instead they make I wanna rock 'n' roll all night. if i didn't use the term with the utmost accuracy that's my bad, but to be very clear that's what im referring to specifically. anyway this continued projection that my anonymous posting on an obscure forum is making some kind of statement instead is strange, and not accurate. i write what i feel on here pretty much
horns, bass line, solo
yeah sure, those things sound good, they sound well performed, definitely took skill. it's also completely irrelevant to my main point, which is just because it's well-made doesn't mean it's in service to anything all that interesting.
i don't understand how u can argue...
another point that shows you either did not read or did not understand what i said because that's quite literally not what i said and i explained this in the first paragraph, so if you're gonna continue to reply to me with dumb s*** like this im gonna be forced to block you because i really don't wanna continue with arguing with someone who won't even read the s*** that i type out. maybe you can just accept that people have different tastes and opinions than you and move on?
wait what? which song was in a kia commercial lmao
I don't think it was actually in a commercial but some guy put Echolalia on a car commercial to show it sounded like car commercial music
