Nolan thinks cinemas won't last past this. He's trying to do the dark knight thing of sacrificing his reputation/finances to make sure cinemas exist and don't face bankruptcy in the future.

I think it's a flawed way of thinking, but it's not about the money for him. He sees the artform as a whole facing unprecedented danger and thinks he can take moves to help it.
