Eren killing his mom was such a forced plot twist though how tf would he even do that?

while kid eren was watching his mom be eaten, "future" eren was already influencing reality in the background, in order to.. do something. idek

there's no reason for me personally to relitigate the reasons why people hated the manga ending (mainly bc people really seem to like the anime ending, but also because there's 1000 of videos that do this from back then), but one really big reason that does not feel like it has any effect in this episode is that some people found it really gross that Ymir loved Fritz and that's why she was willing to do his horrible deeds forever. The two moments where that could be relevant are Zeke's dialogue to Armin and the flashback with Mikasa and I didn't personally think much of it in either moment. I personally didn't have a problem with this in the manga, but I also heard of the concept of stockholm syndrome, which seemingly, many did not.

I managed to avoid spoilers for this the entire time and it was well worth it! I’m really speechless. Erens entire character arc is one of the best I’ve ever seen and I could’nt be more pleased by how all of this turned.

Maybe I’m talking too soon then because I haven’t seen it yet

    Watch rn goofy!!

if only eren wasn't an idiot, 80% of humanity wouldn't have died

  • btw even as someone who didn't like it, there was definitely a ton of stupid s*** we complained about. I know that I spent at least a good 5-10 minutes just on the "final panel"

My issue with that is it kinda came out of nowhere and made her entire moment with eren less impactful. Initially I thought her jumping to save fritz was her escaping the horrible life she lived and seeking freedom in death but flipping it into her being in love with fritz made it seem like they were forcing the Mikasa parallels

Good thread on Eren/Mikasa and the concept of love in Attack on Titan

Looks interesting, saving this for later

I feel like I have to toe an invisible line here bc so much of the last leg of this series is subject to interpretation, and I don't want to sound stupid or short-sighted only looking at it way I look at it.

I thought of the theme for most of S4 being freedom over everything with touches of love, and then you get an abrupt shift in the last ~3 chapters to love being the driver for basically everything that happened in the entirety of the series. At that time where I was at with my brain, I think my perception of love was so different from what I guess you would call the f***ed up displays of love that exists in this world. Maybe this is me now playing devil's advocate in a way that I didn't at that time

I still can't see how Eren loves Mikasa in anything close to a romantic way, but the anime does a better job of creating a greyer area that his love for her exists in. Armin loves Eren in almost idolic sense that exists outside of the true hate he has for his actions. I think it's more or less the same in both versions, although he tries to use his big noggin to apply the same type of rationalizations we do (or did) in the anime. Ymir's desire for freedom is almost chicken or the egg like with her feels for Fritz. Like with Stockholm, I think she prob viewed herself as a hostage at some point. But I also think she ignored, or even came to appreciate his faults.

I don't want to write an essay to you, but that's more or less how i'm viewing some of these themes that really do stretch past just this arc, but obviously, we don't need them to make as much sense to us as we need this ending to lol. Isayama also asks us to go from being black and white for 85% of the series to grey when Eren switches sides, and then there's moments that are both in the last 5 chapters. It can feel like alot as the viewer

  • I really have to give the guy props for putting together a conclusion that can make you think as much as this has. I believe it's past 2 years later since the end of the manga, and I can still come back to this work and it activates the entirety of my thinking cap.

I can always appreciate when I have a problem because of the creator overwriting and there being problems that derive because of that, rather than writing a tiny fart that just runs from very high-level questions

I see what you're saying and tbh I agree with most of it, its just that it seemed like love wasn't really a big theme of the series and making it the main focus at the end with Mikasa and eren wasn't a good way to end the series imo especially given the way post timeskip was written.

The last like 8 chapters were hella rushed but idk how they do that about face (switch up) any different even if they had extra time to work with

It’s just so thematically different from what we had to that point

  • I’m alright with Isayama getting to do what he wanted to do with the story, but I was giving the story hella GoT comparisons with “character A” suddenly being where they need to be to progress the story (yadda yadda manga b****ing)

Long story short, him ending the series as quickly as he did is still very very interesting to me to this day

Nah he did it because he's an idiot, didn't you hear him? He's just a quirky guy that made an oopsie

Yeah for a show that was so focused in it's narrative it truly fell apart at the end good God.

It wasn't all bad, they just dropped the ball with Eren and his motivations

I’m dead. Is it taboo to like Reiner, Annie and Mikasa? They were some of my favourites 💀💀💀

It really did feel rushed as the chapters were coming out. Wonder if he changed up the ending and how much was altered of it was

my only real complaint that I wish Eren put up more of a fight. We got to see a badass gigantic attack titan and they whooped his ass like it was nothin

So strange that the writer is a fan of Breaking Bad and seemed to try to mimic the scene where Walter admits that he did it for himself here but instead we get this stupid s*** with his reasoning being that he's "an idiot"

People are just mad that the author chose stockholm syndrome as the main culprit of this series
