It's the seventh installment of someone else's franchise and he is making comment on how soft reboots do that and the conflicting emotions of doing so which range from nostalgia and genuine sentiment to craven profit seeking. As I said already but thanks for getting out behind the points I made.

And no, his set pieces are not rehashed. He's working with someone else's toolset the same way he did Evil Dead and Texas Chain Saw. He is using them in interesting ways. Don't Breathe 1 and 2 also have great set pieces if you want something of his own design.

The alien monster baby birthed by a teenage pregnancy coded as a stun baton rape getting smashed into an asteroid belt hadn't been done in the franchise to my knowledge. Nor had an auto gun zero gravity suspended acid splash. Like writing that out does that sound phoned in to you? He sets up the asteroid belt pulley harness thing in half a line at a start of the film as they establish the zero g. The dominoes are all there from the beginning.

You went to see the seventh installment of the Alien series. We are all AI ChatGPT for watching IP. Fede is working within that context. Within what studios and audiences want. Movies are expensive and he is a franchise gun for hire who has done it three times now.

He was building as much practically as he could. Even the android people hated was a whole animatronic puppet first they they then mapped that stuff over. They had multiple different face hugger systems. Guillermo del Toro would c***his pants they did so much physical work on that film. And the special effects of the asteroid belt were a whole particle sim. That's not just a rendered graphic. That thing has physics and collision.

And again, his films tend to be divisive and engage with the points people raise against them already. He understands what he is doing. You don't have to agree with it, but this was a popular well received film as well. And unfortunately we won't get to see what he would do with more leeway because he had a real vision of his own. How he is he hack slop franchise AI when he has to leave the franchise over creative differences?

In all honesty to me there’s nothing more to explore with this series anymore and when you overexpose something like the horror in something like this to the point where there are cannon in universe biology breakdowns of how it works it gets tired loses what made it scary to begin with

FX show is underrated

Alien Earths biggest crime is taking gambles that the audience wasn’t willing to embrace. Not unlike how audiences received Alien 4, Prometheus and Covenant. Yet audiences seem to find the good in those no problem. Maybe it’s the years removed that’s given them grace because I don’t see how Alien Earth is any worse. Everything it took a risk on is right in line with the absurdity often found in the Alien-verse. I would much rather see the approach with the synthetics/androids continued from Earth than whatever pretentious god complex Ridley needs to be fulfilled in this “trilogy”. Timothy Oliphant mogs Fassbender btw.

It’s the seventh installment yet both Prometheus and Alien Covenant found ways to do very new things and tell a new story. If anything, people were most mad about Covenants third act for playing it safe. I feel like we’ve just gone from wanting originality to wanting the same s*** over and over and getting mad when anyone does something bold.

The whole teenage pregnancy angle isn’t even new because the original Alien already had the themes of forced pregnancy and rape and trauma. Romulus just makes it far more heavy handed which is dogshit writing

Also I just don’t think the set piece or practical work is particularly impressive. Like most of Alien has always relied on it and nothing in Romulus even comes close to anything as incredible as the set piece work of the original Alien or that gothic horror inspired lair in the 2nd act of Covenant. Just because they worked hard doesn’t mean they made anything unique.

I don’t hate Alien Earth but it does feel like Alien got turned into a generic tv algorithm show. There isn’t anything cinematic about it and the actual alien action is extremely generic. The horror is weak too.

Last episode goofy but a lot of it worked imo!

this franchise takes 35 years to finally do something and add some depth to the Alien world and then decides to go away from it

Nothing particularly deep about giving the Xenos an origin. It’s typical god/ozymadnius slop. What Alien Earth did exploring the synthetics and android is miles more creative original and deep than whatever they’ve been forcing in that “trilogy”. It’s just directionless exposition between the action. Just cuz Ridley wants there to be a deep meaning behind it doesn’t mean it truly is. If a character slowly pontificates about life and its origins in a British accent that makes it have depth? S*** is mid

Slowly pontificating about life is a million times more intriguing than another heavy handed anti corp slop narrative. It’s also actually fresh and evolving a lesser talked about theme implied in the original films

Also like all of this writing in Alien Earth was already done far better in the first 2 aliens. It just comes off as amateur fan service to over explain concepts for dumbasses who didn’t pick up on any of the subtext of the original films.

Fam you’re vouching for the “trilogy” that is quite essentially fan service to over explain the space jockey concept. Ridley Scott took a HR Giger background piece that he ignored for decades and made Fassbender wax poetically about it as if that was the plan the whole time. S*** is revisionist buns

The plan was to do more films. Ridley had to rush it since Prometheus didn’t do super well. I am aware there are flaws to Covenant. I also know it’s miles ahead of the AI slopfest generic s*** shows that are Alien Earth and Romulus, which literally feel like untalented nerds doing fanservice
