Loved Romulus
Most people did. It made a ton of money. Online blowback over the deep fake stuff overshadowed that. And I thought it was horrifying in a way the movie plays into. Bringing that guy back is an abomination and they all pay for it

You ever blown backs out?
the rumor on this is that Fede wanted to have Fassbender and David be the leads but Ridley veto'd
Saw this coming after the David Jonsson black Panther reveal, even more likely since cailee is rumored for X-men too
Apparently Ridley Scott was breathing down Fede’s neck the whole production of Romulus, might be hard to find someone willing to deal with Ridley’s creative control on it

yes;
While “Alien: Romulus” director Fede Alvarez admits to using AI to create the illusion, he hopes viewers will consider the film’s larger intent. {...} For the production of “Romulus,” Rook was designed as an animatronic. 80 to 90% done by the puppeteers depending on the shot,” says Alvarez {...} He also had British actor Daniel Betts on set in Budapest to record the facial capture {...} Betts’ voice was then transformed to sound more like Holm’s using generative AI and computer modeling.
Production VFX supervisor Eric Barba added that 4K scans of the original film were a useful guide in creating the performance and also gave them training data, as the digital work including the use of AI-enabled techniques from startup Metaphysic. “They were able to retarget the eyes, to fix the eye lines,” explained Barba. “Their tools are fantastic for us to be able to … really kind of direct the performance.”

I found it looking that way relevant to the plot of the film, the themes of the film, and the times we are living in. It's an abominable act to bring someone back who should've been left in the great beyond. That's in the text and the production and the estate gave their blessing. The character is a monster that meet's a monster's end, and everyone is repulsed by them.
If it didn't look "bad" people wouldn't have cared. See those Star Wars movies that do the same s***. So, it's important that it look the way deepfakes did. To me anyway.
