Ok so deadline is tomorrow wednesday thank god
Just finished it. I really liked it! That was my first full album experience with Japanese rock so I donāt have much frame of reference for the genre, but I definitely enjoyed what I heard.
The drummer is FIRE, that was definitely my favorite aspect of the album, and the vocalist can sing his ass off. I canāt make much of a comment on the lyrical content of the album since I donāt speak the language, but from what I looked up about the band I can see that they are known for having a lot of political commentary in their stuff, which is dope.
My favorite tracks were After Dark, To You. The Departing, Night Diving, Laika, Rocknā Roll, Morning Light Falls On You, and A Town in Blue. My number one song on the album is Neoteny. That s*** is HEAT
A very enjoyable album overall!

I am recommending Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream
U probably heard the title track before but I had this album ran back all the time in high school, esp like sophomore year, this is prob the first (indie...ish) electronic album I ever heard
Available on DSPs, if u see only anniversary editions just stop after track 10 - Without You (or keep listening, i just don't know the bonus tracks)
Also it took me forever to think of an album I actually know that has an animal on the cover lol I was gonna recommend Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys if I didn't think of this just now
18/04. Jotting down my thoughts while I listen. This is kicking off well. The vocals are nostalgic for me, reminding me of the late 00s. Production is solid so far, lot of emphasis on the high end which suits the sunny vibes that I'm expecting given the only track I knew of going in, 'Walking On A Dream'. Which is perfect because the sun is finally out here in Ireland. I've always thought this track was nice but I hadn't sought out more from these guys, In 2008, I was swimming in masterpiece leaks from Lil Wayne. I like that 'Half Mast' leads into 'We Are The People'.. Ahh, I have heard this one too, I love this one! 'Delta Ray' switching things up, I really like the bridge here. The soundscapes of 'Country' is pretty although it doesn't move me much, musically, 'The World' is also lacking for me in a similar vein. 'Swordfish Hotkiss Night' is funny, I respect it but I doubt I'll be revisiting it. 'Tiger by My Side' is restoring the vibes. 'Without You' is really nice, cool to close with this 80s pastiche ballad. I am loving this track.. if anything is holding it back, it's the mixing and mastering, especially in regards to the drums.

MIDWEST EMO
my beloved

short review for TTNG - Animals:
you already know i be f***in with them twinkly ass guitars
i am a sucker for an emotional midwest emo riff!! and this album has plenty of them. the writing is vivid and poignant. usually, i feel like with this kind of music, the vocalist lowkey be buns (part of the aesthetic) but this frontman... he can certainly sing and i appreciate that
big fan of the math rock influence, adds some twang to the instrumentation. I'll def be revisiting this album to learn some of them riffs lol. The album started off with like 4 bangers and the last stretch is another highlight. I love "If i sit still" and I was like man, this is the best song... and THEN I heard "26 Is Dancier Than 4" and oh my days
what a tune to cap off a great album! legit one of the best songs I've heard all year.
every band member was locked tf in for this and showed their prowess. they all delivered a performance of pure excellence
the sounds and vocal delivery kinda reminded me of death cab for cutie and mew.
fav tracks: chinchilla, panda, gibbon, pig, if i sit still, 26 Is Dancier Than 4.
7.8/10
will prob play this during a roadtrip with my homies since they f*** with this s*** lol

Paul McCartney - Egypt Station @ryder

I wanted to try to review this album without relying on mentioning McCartney's past career and role in The Beatles. So often I find people or reviewers to judge a later career album incorrectly based on preconceived notions of who the artist is or comparisons to their earlier work. With an artist like Paul McCartney who clearly makes knowing references to past work it's a little bit harder but that's still the attitude I tried to go into this album with.
Overall, I think McCartney did achieve what he set out to do with this album. The album is very well put together and shows an above average level of craft in its arrangements, instrumental performances and balanced flow. There's a knowingly subtle approach to the songwriting which sometimes works and sometimes leaves things feeling a little too hollow and inconsequential. The production is polished, modern and functional. The songwriting is definitely a bit of an artistic bunt but I think the overall package has a bit more to it than one might realize on first impression. Nothing feels overly inspired but it's hard not to at least view this is a decent and focused pop rock album at least.
The opening run of tracks is alright but nondescript, save for a few well-timed instrumental flourishes. "Happy With You" is a good example of the lack of inspiration on display, it almost approaches the level of a nice cozy simple ditty but it feels too half-baked melodically and doesn't go anywhere. I had actually heard some sharp criticism about "Fuh You" before I had ever heard it, and I'm left with mixed feelings. I genuinely think it's trying to actually DO something more than most of the other songs here. It's clearly the catchiest song here melodically although nothing about the song is exactly substantive. It has a clear role in the tracklist that it plays well; it's also fairly annoying. The album really picks up more about halfway through with "People Want Peace" and "Hand in Hand" both feeling a little more fleshed out and emotionally genuine. "Dominoes" is one of the album highlights and has a lot more interesting elements. It's another winner of perfect placement in the album and sparks some more life into the runtime. "Back in Brazil" adds the most compelling rhythms and instrumental timbres of the whole album. It's clearly playing a token faux-exotic role (even if it barely sounds like that) and fits the album well. "Despite Repeated Warnings" is clearly the highlight of the album. It's got a multi-part structure that really works and is genuinely a great song on multiple fronts. The arrangements are very tasteful and balance the strings, horns and rock instrumentation well. This song has the most lyrical and vocal passion and meaning on display of the whole album. "Hunt You Down/Naked/CāLink" then provides a solid outro, especially with its restrained and slow last section that has a nice guitar solo. Together these last two songs make up almost a quarter of the album's runtime and are the most satisfying on the album.
I'd say this album was definitely worth a few listens and stands on its own merits to some extent. It's not quite at the level where I'd claim it to be an outright good album on its own right, but it is decent. Largely uninteresting songwriting is the main factor holding it back. Nothing amazing on here, but some pleasant and expertly crafted moments of goodness mixed in with some tolerable fluff.
6.5/10
@Thread ok i got an album, it was difficult but

i tried to be artsy and look for like a mysterious spanish classic but like i think its best if i got u listening to one of the best albums of my second fav artist ever

Man I have been in such an anti punk anti metal anti rock mood for the past 2 months brand new eyes has 2 INSANE tracks that are hitting for me while in this very specific mood . Those 2 tracks being MISGUIDED GHOSTS and ALL I WANTED , funnily enough the last 2 tracks on the album. @Echiham
put me on with those two tracks . Hayleys vocals on the last track are crazy ALL I WANTED WAS YOU
. And misguided is just a nice ambient Eurostep from the rest of the album
(The Year of the Cat is a 1976 album by Al Stewart consisting of some good olā classic rock tunes)

Iām not really a rock guy, I mean I do listen to it, but I wouldnāt say itās ever my go-to genre to listen to. So forgive me for starting off with some broad strokes here but this album reminded me of a lot of other artists. Iām hearing Space Oddity-era Bowie, some Hotel California-ish Eagles, and a bit of Fleetwood Mac in the production style/rhythm too.
The strongest part of this album for me is the composition. Iām definitely partial to the songs that are more dramatic-sounding like On The Border or Broadway Hotel, but even the softer, easy-listening stuff like Midas Shadow sounded pretty good. Weakest instrumentals would be the (more) upbeat ones like on If It Doesnāt Come Naturally or Flying Sorcery.
The only real drawback I have with this album is the lyrics. They arenāt bad at all, Iād even say the lyrics of Midas Shadow and Broadway Hotel are solid but overall the lyrics don't strike me as ever as compelling or imaginative as the production can be. Even after a couple of listens to each song, a lot of the choruses and verses tend to wash over me as compared to the instrumentals which pulled focus for me pretty often throughout, especially during the solos.
Sometimes the most interesting part of a song was near the end like the guitar solo on One Stage Before or even like during the fade-out like that energetic piano outro on It It Doesnāt Come. To this point and my earlier one about the lyrics, there were a decent amount of times listening to this that I thought ādamn I kinda wish there was like at least 2-3 more minutes of just hearing this soloā
Grievances aside, I do think everything comes together the best on the title track. Actually I think it deserves a decent amount of praise, and a***ysis. That piano melody is so likeā¦solemnly somber, and highlighting it at the beginning on a kinda distant part of (stereo left?) channels for me a long-standing emotional weight, like sad memories of the past that you canāt seem to escape. I also like how the parts with a more uplifting melody just build up to the same sad melody, as if reflecting a form of cynicism about trying to overcome or escape these aforementioned memories, they will only take you right back to them. Oh man, and then all the solos too? The violins, string section, guitar, and a mfing sax solo? Helllll yeahhhh
Overall a solid listen. I think that title track will stay in the rotation for a bit.

dawg the transition between Half Mast and We Are The People used to blow my mind as a kid i was like "you can make songs do that??? no way!!!!"
I think I get what u mean about the vocals cause iirc the vocalist (dude with white hair on the cover) is originally from an alt rock band so having his vocal style on electronic music is a really unique vibe (and prob why the more acoustic stuff like We Are The People work so well too)
i kinda forgot swordfish hotkiss night was on that album until after i recommended it loooool i always thought that song was kinda wack but i like its energy a little more now plus (and this might be a stretch) I feel like it was a little inspired by Blackout-era Britney Spears

I'm glad you liked it and I see what you mean about it being reminiscent of other classic rock, it's got a sound that's very much of its time and place. The album was also engineered by Alan Parsons who engineered Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and of 'The Alan Parsons Project' fame.
@Hndrxx_Free i liked the album but i willl say it was a bit controversial at firstt . I liked it then i thought u sent me a troll album but then i understood the vibes because i realized its from 2013 and it makes more sense. My favorite song is ratchet luv . iām not gonna lie, when i saw this cover i wasnāt really expecting my to hear house music lol. really enjoy the production on here, lots of flavors on here, so thereās always something to catch my ear on, especially the weaving of breaks alongside these songs at times. really like the vocalist choices on here, especially with oumou sangarĆ©, who i was familiar with before this listen. adds a-lot more to the music in lots of ways. very good album hopefully i will return to soon
