Just saw this I was wondering when this was due

This was cool for what it was. The songs felt they could run on a lil long / over stay their welcome sometimes bc they at times had pretty one note structures with minor variations. Still a cool lil project and the songs I liked I could vibe with on shuffle

Never really got into death grips. I thought guillotine was cool tho. Uhhh this actually creeped me out though. There was a song about kids OD’ing at a party and it made me think about DEMON DEMON DEMON. Like I’m trying to imagine a scenario where you’d want to play such a song. Def not at a party. It was still an interesting listen. I can always enjoy some crazy production.

Needle Paw by Nai Palm is a 2017 soul-acoustic album by Nai Palm, the lead vocalist/guitarist of Hiatus Kaiyote whose work I’ve definitely heard of but haven’t really checked out.

Album reminded me of a lot of different things, first off. The vulnerable, sometimes cryptic vocals over acoustic chords reminded me of Endless by Frank Ocean and some of the backing vocal runs reminds me of a bit of the acoustic parts in untitled unmastered by Kendrick. I wonder if there was some influence between the two honestly, cause if I recall Kendrick would end up sampling the 2015 Choose Your Weapon album version of Atari on DAMN. for DUCKWORTH (which is the BEST song on that damn album btw, no pun intended). I also picked up some occasional Lauryn Hill / Erykah Badu vibes in the singing style too.

Anyways I’ll just say that I really liked this album. Just really good soulful singing over acoustic guitars with the occasional electric guitar strum or cultural instrument (talking about Breathing Underwater). It wasn’t until after I heard this album that I found out that a lot of these songs were originally from the earlier Hiatus Koyote album Choose Your Weapon (in a much different production style) but I think it speaks volumes to their quality that these songs sound complete and stand on their own artistically.

I love the framing of the album by leading it in with tribal chanting over some slow, slightly somber guitar chords. It conjures up the feeling of hidden sadness that I found really effective.

I think this style of production and singing can really drive home the sincerity of the musical themes. Themes that can feel universal like leaving a relationship for your own betterment on Crossfire or even Atoll/Homebody which feel like they represent finding a supportive community, making sure to cherish the people around you, but also working on yourself. Again, these lyrical themes aren’t necessarily novel, but the way they are delivered here is done in a way that feels pretty natural.

The more abstract songs I liked a lot too, albeit not as consistently. On the positive side there’s Blackstar / Pyramid Song / Breathing Underwater which reads to me like talking about humanity’s struggle throughout history and the drive to do something as impossible as “breathing underwater” and then the transition to loving someone you would try to breath underwater for them, only for the relationship to sour and leave you with the feelings that breathing underwater would cause. Plus when that (asian?) instrument comes in like the last third? Firrrre

Songs like When the Knife which continues this lyrical theme of just “letting go” that Molasses was doing but it doesn’t feel as musically interesting as Molasses was, and it just kinda comes off as a little repetitive. Same for Borderline with Atoms which does feel like a very sincere song about being physically close to someone but it just didn’t strike me as compelling as the rest of the album. Compare this to Mobius which has a very intriguing melody (and some really good backing vocal moments if my notes recall correctly), but doesn’t make me want to “read” into it the way I want to with Mobius. Also when the musical idea isn’t as interesting on these tracks, the 6-8 minute track lengths do kinda show themselves. Thankfully, this wasn’t too much of an issue for me for the most part.

Alright in summary, this was a pretty good album. Most of this style worked for me which is cool because I rarely listen to this type of acoustic, minimal production but with these kinda vocals, I think it’s really effective.

Favorite tracks: Homebody, Blackstar / Pyramid Song / Breathing Underwater, Atoll

Least favorite tracks: Borderline with my Atoms, Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland)

PS: literally right before I hit send on this review I checked the credits to see if Nai Palm has any instrumental credits did I realize that Blackstar is a David Bowie cover loooooool my bad

When I heard this guy's voice I thought that he was the man that featured on UN PESO from Oasis they have very similar voices.

I can't say his voice always did it or rather his way of rapping that comes across as him just yelling these words at me. It just made it hard for me at times to rlly think about what this nigga is rlly rapping about on some of these songs

Tho when it does work s*** go harde! Like odd intro aside when it leads to BUITRES wew that dark sinister bass and the guitar on the choruses. His aggressive ass voice just floats on this song like he said make this shi darke The following track is also another nice one as i rlly like that looping guitar riff throughout the song.

Then...I kinda get lost until Nino Gordo,Flaco & Cambiando la piel, and Contando Ovejas. I like those three in particular for just how fun and silly of a vibe they give. and the rest i wasnt rlly feeling it

So idk what genre to really call this whole album as its not rlly hiphop but more like indie/alt hiphop? Eventho I didnt always like the voice i did appreciate the many different type of sounds (rock elements for example) tht were used throughout it.

The album that introduced me to ktt 1 (D’Angelo thread), my first ever last fm scrobble is this . Haven’t listened in over a decade properly and Holy, this is some of the best music ever made . Prayer is I’m prayer gng 4l now 🙏.

I mean ya this was great lol

In the opening track there’s a hard synth sound that I wish they leaned into but it’s gone almost immediately. I wasn’t aware this was a critically acclaimed album but I can mostly see why given the time it came out. Right now the album feels nostalgic of a bygone era. Akin to a lost future of sorts. The cheery pop music of this album feels haunted by time. The tunes appear more as fiction than anything actually tangible.

But it’s still a great pop album. Between the song writing and (for their time) cutting edge production, this is a fresh pop album. I had this on repeat for a week and a half, sometimes listening to it 2-3 times a day. I think fakin it, pinky’s dilemma, and a hazy shade of winter are my favorites.

yep i would say its kind of a fusion of indie with alt hip hop. This album was like a stepping stone before he fully went and just do rock (he came up as a battle rapper)

Ok so first listening to the blink 182 fellas. Didnt know what to except they make gatar music so went in raw no pause

Overall thoughs it was like a fun albim u know. It has a moody sound but its more off like a fun way instead of being depressed. Very upbeat sounding instrumentals and the guy playing drums washed the guitar play

It was a good listening. Im not too versed on rock, punk and its subgenres so i love discovering and being exposed to new sounds. I think at one moment if u not super focused it can kind of blend together but i feel its more of a rock music problem, it didnt happen too much.

I dont know the name of the guy singing but he did good. He displayed good emotion on his voice. Also fun fact i thought they sounded british for some reason

Ya Travis Barker is one of the best drummers oat esp in this genre but Tom Delonge (also one of the singer) also rips it on gatar His voice is truly unique and i guess i could see why ud think theyd be british but they all american
