Think we all know young people who dont vote and just don't care, im surprised whenever i meet someone my age who knows the first thing about politics, where as its very unusual i meet an old ass man/woman who doesn't at least know who he/she supports

if young people make up 20% of the electorate (idk if they do or don't or what the number is) and they end up making up 14% of the actual voters, that is statistically good.

They don’t care because young people are more interested in entertainment generally than politics. It’s not because they’re particularly disadvantaged, because black turnout was at white levels in 2012. If young people cared, they would do something about it

well said, coming from a similar area (missouri, tho) his thread rang true on WHY, but that WHY is still seated in a sort of (understandably so) nihilism/apathy in federal government in favor of the practical application of local political/community solidarity.

and yeah, that’s just being reasonable - local government will always have a more impactful and resonant experience on you (especially in a tight community) than the federal government, especially when you are a disenfranchised group.

but just bc traditionally these groups have been isolated out of the federal arena and rather had to drag themselves up through local party building and community organizing to actually get change, doesn’t mean that needle can’t be shifted in the right direction. enclosing one’s self or reinforcing the idea to ones community that “the battle is already lost” is a valid stance to have when looking at history - but taking a step back - black people don’t owe democrats s***, they owe BLACK democrats - who, again, have been traditionally shut out of the party on a federal level just as much as republicans have done, and for those reasons should acknowledge they are fringe outliers compared to the “democrat/republican establishment” just as much as an Independent is.

it’s just such a double edged sword thought process and, again, i totally understand apathy or lack of trust on the federal level. but showing solidarity as a “local” dem and community SHOULD NOT equate to just falling in rank and file with what they do federally (which, again, they shut you out of on purpose and just bank on unwavering support, bc they lose nothing in the end)

Young people are apathetic because they are more worried about finding their place in life I guess. The most I’m trying to get at is that it’s not like there’s some external force keeping young people from voting, even if alevery primary was open with in person and mail early voting, turnout would still be higher among people over 45. What do you think we should do about it
