Yee lol which is why it’s funny when people talking about it being a feminine movie and I just don’t think that’s the case lol
That would explain some things
yeah this was really good but also a very male centric view of female sexuality/empowerment imo lol. I also don’t like how they randomly shoehorned her ex-husband in (who was also terribly written like don’t look up/saltburn tiers of s*** writing). ran for too long but had a lot going for it otherwise
7 / 10
Bella regards s***the same way she regards sweets and violence. They're all just stimuli. The film is about developing an ideology that sees exploitation, sexual or not, for what it is. It's not sexy. The s***is often a punchline which is empowering. She refuses to be victimized.
If it's male centric, it's because the world is male centric and she is subject to it. It's not a fantasy alternative like Barbie.
That would explain some things
Yeah I’m sort of annoyed that no one is talking about it lol
Yeah I was left a little disappointed with the ending. Also felt like they didn’t really end up going anywhere with all the philosophy/politics even though there were some profound effects on Bella.
Thought they’d go more into the socialism/capitalism commentary, maybe the book does but the film made it feel like the author was glazing himself for pointing out flaws in society without offering any novel ideas on it.
Art direction was immaculate, Emma stone delivered an Oscar performance, great supporting cast and plenty memorable characters that didn’t overstay their welcome. The old lady on the boat was my favorite
Totally agree
Glad to see this convo resurface
You can't end the movie about actualization and nirvana on a stereotypical ass wedding . And of course the movie can't prescribe answers to the world's ills. I think it actually retreats from them into fantasy because the only other alternative is suicide. It's not an optimistic movie imo. It's ultimately fatalist or knowingly escapist.
If you want to pace it differently so that ending is organic instead of tacked on that's an argument. I thought the movie built up enough goodwill by that point and Chris Abbott popped me pretty hard by interrupting what was designed to feel like an endpoint.
need to sit on it a bit more to fully digest but I feel like it's unfair to criticise the film for not having a more overtly socialist or feminist message when I don't think it was ever intended to. bella is a blank slate for all these raw feelings and energies. i think at most the point was to draw on the inate hypocrisies of the world, society at large using that rather than put forward a treatise on a particular ideology or view (even if that does overlap into those other things at times)
I prob agree that the last like 20 mins are probably unnecessary but not to the material detriment of the film
What made it male-centric iyo? You're not the first one to bring up that issue with this movie as well. I'm just curious
well at least to me, it felt like the film was commenting on female empowerment through sexual liberation, but that thesis really isn't challenged in any meaningful way.
it's somewhat of a lighthearted movie and not every movie has to address every single issue that relates to the film, but (for example) it felt like the film willfully and naively copped out when it depicts bella getting to the brothel.
different people have different readings of the film obviously and many of them are valid, but so much of the attention around the film is labelling it as "feminist", which if it is, is a very flawed depiction to me.
i did like the film and i think it's great that people are resonating with such a creative film but some of the messaging was unclear to me. (also got a bit preachy in the last 30 minutes of the film but thats kind of a different topic)

your points are valid, i think that i wanted a different film than what i saw and that's alright.
have you read the novel? it seems like there were some important changes made that kind of altered the film's ending

Nope. Not sure I would associate the two. I've had some pretty different feelings about movies and their source material.
The writer gave Lanthimos his blessing and Lanthimos commented on how this film ended up expanding on Dogtooth. Honestly, the film kind of ends up back at that starting point. The edenic post script is very insular. Not sure what the novel does.

Essential viewing for Poor Things. Can't be understated. He screened it for the author to convince him to give him the rights for Poor Things. He loved it

Appreciate the input. It's gonna be interesting comparing the book to the movie
Did you catch that it was a baby boy brain that they put in her body?
When is this mentioned anyway

Belive there’s a shot of the X-rays and you can see that it was male. Can’t remember specifically but when God is explaining everything I think it’s revealed around there
Good lord this was f***ing fantastic
10/10
easily
This might be one of my fav films
This was incredible. I liked The Lobster but never really had a Yorgos film "click" with me, but this one did it. I'm a stan now
Emma gonna give Lily Gladstone a run for her money. Mark Ruffalo was hilarious too. Felt like the Weird Barbie movie we deserve.
