I said studying old work has diminishing returns. Thats because as you approach the current moment your witnessing the gradual selection of better characteristics of art i.e. bad ideas get filtered out over time

Thats why studying contemporaries is better. Your listening to the more refined version of something that already existed

Most ppl dont have the time or energy to parse everything that ever existed
