2.5 weeks. i put in about 10-12 hours per day studying for it. follow the official exam objectives comptia has, it'll help a lot with the structure.

FWIW, jason dion claims that taking comptia exams close to their expiration date is a mistake, since comptia tends to update their test banks to counter the dumps put online lol. he says at this point 601 is the easier exam. idk how true that is but 601 has like 20-30% more content, so it's probably not an easy decision to make whether to go 501 or 601.
if you're gonna go for 501, don't rely on test dumps for multiple choice but the problem solving ones had quite a few that were either 1:1 or almost the exact same with what's on the exam. the phone/server one in this video was basically the same with a few extra choices, and here goes another that was the exact same. there was another that involved setting up a firewall with the most ass interface possible, i didn't even bother doing that one

    wish i had that discipline

deciding between the 501 & 601 is kinda hard. if i f*** up and don't pass the 501, i would just be wasting time since i could've just studied for the 601, but that also has more objectives to meet. i'll see how i'm feeling in a week or so to make the decision.

i've gone through prof messer's playlist about 1.5x, have the gibson book, so i have his examples of the problem solving questions. though i did like all of this over the past year and change

i'm fortunate enough to work from home and usually don't have too much work to do so i've got the time to study. i'm just hoping my newfound motivation/end of my procrastination lasts for more than a couple days

yea, my PM at my job let me study on the clock so i was thankful for that lol.

for the resources i used in order from most used to least:

    • all of prof. messer's videos, and took notes on almost every one of them
    • jason dion's practice exams on udemy. none of these questions will show up on the exam but they're asked in a way that prepares you to think how you should on comptia. it's (usually) $10; you know how those udemy sales are.

    • pluralsight's course. they go a lot more specific with the concepts than messer does so it was nice to go to them when i needed to really focus on something. you have to pay for a subscription with them but i just used the 10 day free trial. also there's a few videos that have typos so they might throw you off.

    • gibson's book. probably would've done a lot better if i actually read it. didn't have time for a book though so i just skimmed the glossary lol

i'll have to check out dion's practice exams. definitely think those'll help a bit, even just to get used to how the questions are asked because i know the wording can be kinda convoluted/loaded on the exam.

i took the "main" one in gibson's book, i think i initially got a 65% or so, which was a lot better than i thought i was gonna get. gonna have to run it back after i finish studying a bit more to see how i'm doing a year later

fortunately a lot of the content is really straight forward & simple. i know i just need to take a good amount of time with the cryptography & the networking sections since i've always been awful at both of those

yea best of luck for either exam you go for for networking and cryptography you gotta have the attributes behind all the acronyms down pat on the actual exam. you should know things close to test time off the top of your head for all of them, i can't remember them all atm, but as an example:

    • DES: symmetric algorithm, uses a 56-bit key and 64-bit block cipher. no longer used, as it's insecure and easy to bruteforce.

    • ECC: an asymmetric algorithm; doesn't use numbers, but curves instead. as a result it's light on resources used despite remaining strong in security.

make sure you don't mix-match acronyms where they shouldn't belong a lot of people make mistakes like putting MD5 down as a symmetric or asymmetric algorithm. if you go to a testing center, they usually (not sure if it's always the case) give you a blank sheet of paper. i feel like it saved me before the exam, i wrote all of the algorithms down under their categories so i didn't get them confused.
