There's so much wrong with rap right now, it'd be kind of crazy to just sit here and list everything. But I'll say this, the rap game is way too hive minded right now.
They pushed the Carti/Uzi core kids too hard and the vast majority of them genuinely suck
if I took enough time, I could easily make a list of every big album to drop by an artist who debuted >2018 in the last 7 years,
Name them
And My Turn was big yes… but that was five years ago, and he’s lost a lot of his buzz since then, a lot. The Leaks was a bounce back for him but doesn’t seem like it’s gonna be that commercially successful.
2020 it seemed like the next gen was shaping up to transition and take over but then it just… didn’t happen lmao
okay, here’s 40 projects for you since 2018 that either topped billboard or year end sales lists. if we expand the criteria to 2017 as debut, then Carti, 21 and Uzi are added to all of the below and further expands the lists, including this year.
2018: Invasion of Privavcy, ? & 17 (xxx), Goodbye & Good Riddance, Harder than Ever (album had Yes Indeed), Until Death Call My Name (NBA, 606k year end), Hoodie SZN (plat 2019)
2019: Drip Harder, Drip or Drown 2, Deathrace for Love, Baby on Baby, Kirk, 7 (Lil Nas), AI Youngboy, Die A Legend (all of these projects outsold Igor on year end lists), The Goat
2020: Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, My Turn, Shoot for the Stars, Blame it on Baby (Rockstar #1), Wunna, Legends Never Die, Top, Good News (critical acclaim for Meg)
2021: Voice of the Heroes, Hall of Fame (Rapstar #1), Sincerely Kentrell, SoulFly, Montero, Planet Her (top 5 selling 2022)
2022: DS4EVER, Come Home (First Class #1), It’s Only Me, Colors, Beautiful Mind, her project didn’t sell well but Latto had Big Energy go #3
2023: A Gift & A Curse, Nostalgia, Scarlet. weak year for newcomers album wise, but Doja and Jack had a #1 single and Gunna #4 single post prison
2024: Last Lap, One of Wun, Alligator Bites, Glorious. weak year, but we had the beef
2025: WHAM. not much else from the new school big this year (if you don’t count Carti).
They pushed the Carti/Uzi core kids too hard and the vast majority of them genuinely suck
Most of them are actual kids still developing in real time, which we haven’t really seen before

In the early 10s, there wasn't just one way to be cool as a rapper. You had your dreamers, losers, fashion guys, thugs, ladies men, weirdos etc, all rapping to a certain group. Motherfuckers like Uzi came in with the demeanor of a High School class clown while claiming to be "different" and it all went downhill from there.
I honestly can’t speak on modern rap I am so out of touch

I couldn’t tell you who’s really popping on outside carti
Its funny how 2017 and 18 are considered great years now because for me they were already start of the slow decline
Uzi
Carti
Juice
Was a great era
Also had smokepurrp, peak travis scott, dudes like larry june coming in, s*** was fye
I agree with you but these posts are super counterproductive. You niggas love making threads like this but not pay attention to any posts putting y'all on to new music
cause the genre is 4 decades deep and niggas still want rap stars to be like the 90s and 2000s, the genre isn’t being given a chance to transition but expected to keep slaving and generating new stars and sounds every 2-3 years! sad s***

These new kids are f***ing weird imo theyre obsessed with copying other styles, being original is lowkey seen as lame rn

Whether these kids in rap notice or not, Pop Stars/Rockers are on the rise again. It's not even a talent thing, rap is just lame and overexposed now.

What do you mean? this is a single year, if we went and included multiple years as he did we would have TPAB,GKMC, FHD, Rodeo, DS2 etc.

I’m seeing a whole lotta mid after 2020 plus not seeing any artists that debuted after 2019
Also Doja Cat is not a rapper, and your point about Igor is not entirely true
Not sure what you mean by "mid-late 2000's" but this was what we got in hip hop from 2004-2009.
Outside of the ringtone slop hits, we were loaded with great projects in that era. And I don't even think the quality of the 2010's picked up until 2011 cause there were mad disappointing mainstream rap album drops in 2010 outside of MBDTF.
i didn’t say the era was totally bankrupt of talent and good music but everything looks better in hindsight. i’d rather lock in on finding what of the current output i enjoy rather than figuring out where it fits into the larger canon and compare it to what i enjoyed from years ago. i just know what new s*** i like and support it and if i feel like the older releases are fitting my vibe more i’ll listen to those idk
Ngl bruh his list might be better. Nostalgia is beating this sites ass
It’s not nostalgia because it’s quantifiable as well. There are no rap acts who debuted after 2019 that are putting up big numbers. It simply does not exist
I feel like some of y’all are just defending it because we’re existing in the current moment, but in 20-30 years the first half of the 2020s is definitely going to be seen as one of the weakest eras of hip-hop creatively overall, there’s just no debate about it honestly
The time period was so great that albums like Habits & Contradictions, Control System and Cilvia Demo literally go under the radar and are rarely talked about.

black hippy back then was too crazy
don’t forget yeat, central cee, dave, larry june, and the big years fakemink and esdeekid just had
See this is why the conversation can never be had seriously.
We talking about the mainstream and you naming Fakemink and Esdeekid

We don’t listen to rap for the charts. Chart thread f***ed this site up when people took it seriously and not as a banter/meme thread.
