I think a big reason why this rollout is so lacking in hype is because since the Weeknd's last album, women and gay men have secured their monopoly on what pop music is cool, and the Weeknd's music and what it represents is very apparently contradictory to this new wave. Chappell Roan and Clairo have softened my heart and i think the hearts of a lot of others so now, songs like Heartless and Abel swag raps of Timeless sound cringey.

i dunno if this is entirely on point considering that dawn FM was sonically his least d***ged out and machismo sounding album to date and it was by far his least successful, not spawning anything even close to a hit. meanwhile timeless has performed fine, in large part due to carti's presence on the song but still.

i think if anything people would prefer if he abandoned pop and went all in on dark R&B and rap adjacent sounds. there's just no appetite for hearing him do more 80s stuff among casual listeners.
