Wlr sold 100k and just went gold

Durk’s The voice dropped after, never sold more than 70k in one week and is already platinum

If youre going to make a sales over quality argument at least get it right.

    The Voice didnt go platinum.

Agree that WLR was bigger than CLB. Drake only used a haircut, his name, an emoji cover, and entertaining the Ye beef for promo and dropped an average album that will do numbers solely off the strength of the name and status rather than the music itself.

I want to disagree with Donda but I can't; Kanye pretty much did what Carti does by "leaking" songs, a la the listening parties, but did take it a step further by actually dropping them (Why Carti never did a Dark Lane Demo Tape of his own is beyond me). He built hype by wearing masks & not doing interviews until Drink Champs, debuting finished/unfinished songs, showing his recording process, having big features, controversy and beefing with Drake, his biggest rival/competitor in hip hop. It's a return to form for an iconic artist who's dropped duds and done questionable things for the past few years, but the spectacle of it all can overshadow the music to an extent.

Where WLR shines is in its authenticity; Carti suffered a s*** ton of leaks over 2 years that made him reconfigure the entire project. He kept fans anticipating the release by barely saying anything about the album until its release on Christmas. A few pump fake tweets (. MoNDaY) and a Yachty feature. He let the album live and get its initial reception, and then took it on tour, where it earned people's respect bc you can see first hand how great it sounds live. His punk rock persona and fashion sense has caught on to the youth. His performances have gone viral, and TikTok has shown him mad love, giving the album longer legs to stand on, leading to an increase of streams and a Gold plaque. All he needed was a tour and some time. Hate all you want but Carti let the music/fans speak and carry him to where he is now.

How did Kodak get on there?? He's got such a big gap between sales and streams. Tunnel Vision must've carried him hard to do those numbers

I definitely don’t equate constructing an album in real time using feed back to whatever the hell leaks carti goes though & certainly don’t equate, a (only relatively) abrasive album eventually finding an audience to Ye selling out back to back to back stadium listening, having a 2 month long rollout ☠️ great numbers with what’s essentially a gospel adjacent album
