If you just a vocalist I think artist makes more sense than musician. Musician (while not necessarily true) implies playing instruments or production or something beyond just vocals

That's true. I think vocalist implies singing which a good amount of rappers don't do, or at least it isn't their primary focus

Artist when speaking musically can be a rock band, a rapper, a singer, a trumpet player etc etc. I think people who create music in more than one lane (they rap and sing for example) like using it cause it covers it all

  • Jun 6, 2022

An artist is a frontman, usually a vocalist (non-traditional classically trained singer type)

A musician is anyone who makes music. Every artist is a musician (there’s contention against this, that’s another convo) but not every musician is an artist

the only thing “vocalist” implies is the use of vocals

it doesn’t have to specifically be singing, that’s what a singer is

I mean the technical definition I agree with you, I'm just talking bout the perception. If somebody tells me they're a vocalist my mind goes to singer not rapper

no, that’s the definition of a classically-trained vocalist

a vocalist is a person who provides vocals in music

what are you even talking about nigga?

like i literally took singing lessons for a year, that is not how they term vocalist in industries whatsoever

because that's exactly what it is hence the distinction between vocalist and a singer

Idk if it’s relevant but I’ve heard a lot of athletes talking about the term “athlete” to mean playing more than one sport lol

Like if you only play baseball and not football and basketball you’re not an athlete.

Whereas I don’t really hear that discussion amongst musician since we all use it as a broad term.

In football recruiting, high school players will often get recruited as “athletes” if they haven’t picked their position yet for college, and they play multiple positions in HS. So they’ll sign him on as an athlete instead of a “wide receiver” and then figure out their best fit once they’re in the program.

    Might be related might not

  • Jun 7, 2022

Because a lot of these niggas don’t have the fundamentals and technical foundations to be called vocalists or musicians. They often times work with them though.

that's how the term is used man. there would be no point in distinguishing a singer from a vocalist at that point

it may be how the term is used in certain circles (i assume its just with professional singing type stuff since thats all i can really find) but it is absolutely not how the term is used in common speech. where vocalist = person who performs vocals

and like i was kinda saying earlier a distinction between the 2 terms is that there are different types of musical vocals besides just singing that people include under the word vocalist
