Seems like a good chunk, maybe the majority of people out there tend to dislike musicals. I hear a lot of things like “I wouldn’t enjoyed this if it wasn’t a musical” and things of that nature, or just a general feeling of corniness towards the genre as a whole.
If you’re someone who dislikes musicals in general for whatever reason, I’m curious to know why.
Do you just find them corny in general? Is the “spontaneous” singing and dancing during the show/movie distract you from the rest of the plot? Do you find it too ridiculous/unrealistic? Is it the showtune style of singing and instrumentation? All of the above?
Genuinely would love to hear from some of yall! Just finished up my musical theater unit with my students and the vast majority of them couldn’t stand most of the songs/clips we watched. They loved Little Shop of Horrors, though!
comedy writers ain't songwriters
Wym? Most musicals have the story and music written by two different people
I wonder how much the stereotype of “theater kids” plays into people’s disdain for it too

IDK I just feel like if they were regular normal songs I shouldn't have a problem w it in theory. But a song that's intended to tell a story or make ppl laugh is hard to execute well IMO
it’s probably the exaggerated vocals for most people
I feel this. Pretty interesting phenomenon I noticed while my students were watching Little Shop this week was they pretty much ONLY liked the songs that were sung by the plant.
Plant’s voice was Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops, sounds NOTHING like what you’d typically hear on Broadway. One of the most iconic voices ever, and they loved all of his songs.
In comparison, they really didn’t like hearing Audrey sing, and she has a musical theater background and her voice is commonly what you’d hear on Broadway.
Gotta imagine the two very different singing styles play a part in that
I don't mind corny but musicals are corny and annoying and that's a step too far
But like I wanna know what you feel is corny and annoying about them lol I feel like there’s so many outlets that one could find a musical annoying
I wonder how much the stereotype of “theater kids” plays into people’s disdain for it too
this, subdued lgbt+phobia, very limited view of cinema/theater as only meant for serious acting but are unable to appreciate the dramatics of song, general chauvinist attitude against emotional expression, not a lot of them are really all that good nor know how to target men's intrests, pricing of broadway / shows has increased exponentially which detracts new audiences further, people who straight up just dont enjoy camp

That being said I'm sure I listen to/enjoy plenty of s*** that others would consider corny and annoying. Just enjoy what you enjoy and be authentic.
? most people loved the first wicked movie, la la land is considered one of the greatest movies of the century, chicago is a classic etc. musicals are a very hard thing to execute tho which is why some aren’t received well
It's hard to define tbh but I hate them 99% of the time. Literally cause me physical discomfort.
bollywood's domestic success should be studied tho, curious why india has such a fervency for integrating song with cinema
Who dislikes musicals? Like musical movies? I’m not a fan of musical movies because I have a lot of love for actual musicals performed live
To me, the best part of seeing a musical is that there are cast variations, different leads, different voices, everyone is going to have their own stamp on each performance. It’s live and raw and you’re there to enjoy the voices.
A musical movie is the same thing every time you see it and it’s all prerecorded s*** with many retakes. It’s a lot more boring and uninteresting.
