Big agree. Random race swaps for no reason kinda irk my brain. Like it just feels like an alternate version rather than straight from the source material. I don’t mind it much and side characters who don’t matter that much
It also feels like sloppy seconds to turn a popular white character into a black version out of the blue. I hate feeling like corporate execs are trying to pander to me. How bout Give us new and original characters instead of black version of white character
That said it doesn’t ruin my enjoyment of anything. Just minor pet peeve
That’s all it is is pandering.
Javier Bardem is playing King Triton in the same movie
Pedro Pascal is Joel in Last of Us
It’s only an issue to people in one instance
Black peoples existence is political apparently

You know how many race swaps there are that haven’t elicited any sort of response regarding these kinds of attitudes?
and guess what, they’re ALL whitewashed
That’s all it is is pandering.
It's pandering sure but does it actually change anything in most stories? Absolutely not so it's pretty much harmless the only reason it's making noise is because of white racists who can't fathom the existence of non white people
I wouldn't even say its pandering anyway like it probably doesn't change a thing about who is gonna go watch the movie or not (except racists I guess)

As long as we agree it’s pandering, sure. People don’t like to be pandered to, it’s really disgusting sometimes. For all races.
My biggest issue with all of this is why can’t they just create original stories instead of recreating IPs?

Well I agree with that who even asked for a live action little mermaid film? Who asked for any of these live action remakes in the first place
Also yeah it's lazy to just swap somebody's gender or race I mean it doesn't really do anything but wouldn't it be cooler to just create new characters who would be way better representation instead of just being like copy pasted characters with one difference, probably
But like anyone who's making a huge deal about this is weird to me, in the end it's just a kids movie if it can make some kids dream isn't that all that matters
Well I agree with that who even asked for a live action little mermaid film? Who asked for any of these live action remakes in the first place
They’re some of the worst movies ever made lol, they knew what they were doing making Ariel black. I don’t care what race she is, but their actions are so disingenuous.
And then to make it into a live action film with one of the most garbage trailers ever
you can hardly even see anything because it’s so damn dark. If this is what they’re trying to do to be “inclusive” it f***ing sucks and they can do so much better.
Jasmine was played by half white half Indian when Agrabah based on Middle East but no one cared
Fym there was tons of backlash for that lol yall pick and choose
Fym there was tons of backlash for that lol yall pick and choose
Yeah it was because the live action was literal dogshit
Not because of casting

I think the main criteria should be if she has a good singing voice and can carry the songs, I think this is the case here it's too bad the film looks terrible and the reception has already been corrupted by this stupid debate imo

Wrong. A quick google search would easily show that there was tons of backlash because of the whitewashing of this but you choose to ignore it.

I misremembered, my point is these are adaptions and it’s their vision of the story they want to tell
Their reasoning for Jasmine is Agrabah isn’t a real place which is fair enough

Why the hell not lol
See: my next post fool

Yeah lol even in the film adaptation there’s a million cultural mishmashes between the Middle East, Turkish culture, Persian culture, and Indian culture
this lil mermaid s*** funny as all hell....
the outrage makes it seem like the old version doesnt exist...
if you wanna see ariel as white literally just go watch that one
You know how many race swaps there are that haven’t elicited any sort of response regarding these kinds of attitudes?

Sure, and the same thing applies. I can only speak for the media I care about. And 9/10 nothing gets whitewashed in that media so uh…

Nah bro my view on casting has always been cast whoever fits the director’s vision as long as it doesn’t contradict the character’s culture
Ariel has no ethnic culture attached to the character so fair game
Jasmine is from Agrabah which is a fictional place. So again I have no issue with the casting of Naomi. I just didn’t remember if there was backlash or not
My opinion is consistent
