Was diff context back then, its was great for it. Fast forward 20-30 years n add some extreme commodification and its a whole diff game. Ofc niggas wasn't thinking like that then.
Sounds like niggas got dumbed down but ok
Don’t even think it comes down to being conscious or not. Some of it is about actual knowledge of the English language and a lack of an attention span.
Younger people in school are just more illiterate on average compared to kids in school 20-30 years ago.
You throw on Nas and the majority of these young kids have no clue what he’s saying and don’t have to the attention span to follow it even if they did understand.
Throw on Mobb Deep and they can’t follow that s*** either. And Mobb Deep ain’t conscious or preachy, they’re telling you real s*** straight from the streets. Hardest bars OAT on some of their songs , and even they’re beyond what people can comprehend these days.
RT
I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and guess I'm not the audience that conscious rappers are speaking to. It just seems like the conscious s*** I heard was pointing out the obvious, for example, " D**** are bad and destroy lives", " the government is a s***-show" type songs. I see the merit in it, but, I don't feel the need to listen to s*** that's been obvious( to me at least) for years.
Conscious music in general never been my thing overall
Why ya keep saying "concious" rap isn't interesting musically?
There's a f*** tons of albums that are considered "conscious" that proves otherwise

Very true
Kanye alluded to on New Slaves
Also I think it was kendrick that said it but every rapper that raps about their perspective is conscious in their own way.
I think people have a preconceived notion that rappers that are considered "concious" only rap bout racism is bad, killing is bad, when more so it's about rapping bout their perspective that might involve those themes
Why ya keep saying "concious" rap isn't interesting musically?

It’s mad double standards going on in this thread
cos rap is a young mans game and when ur a teenager ur angry alot etc at least i was
now that im 30 i cant rly get into all the d*** talk or homophobic, female slander etc
I've always been more drawn towards conscious rap but some of what people call conscious isn't really that
COASTCONTRA is conscious and they are the furthest thing from boring ever, them niggas cold and have energy out of this world but it's real s***
I mostly love when rappers mix conscious with trap elements, that's when hip hop is really at it's finest in my opinion but I can totally understand why some people don't want to hear about that s***, it's a mood
the mr morale hate is agenda driven and reactionary, kendrick is the rare sort of conscious artist that can strike the middle ground of instilling messages + unique concepts in his music, while making them still musically interesting and enjoyable
other conscious artists on the other hand, they might have fantastic technical ability, or have great messages in their music etc. but it's usually not something that you really want to go out of your way to listen to (e.g Aesop Rock, Immortal Technique, Rapsody etc.)
Perfectly said
This for example
Mavi is one of the best writers out, so underrated it's crazy
Why ya keep saying "concious" rap isn't interesting musically?

It's also a huge copout, there's a lot of s*** that people hype up that's not all that interesting musically.
conscious rap better than it’s ever been
Some of it is ass, sure but let’s keep it a buck, to most people ignorance is exciting from a distance. Plus it’s not really “cool” to like that type of rap.
Realer than real for including Topaz Jones
Conscious rap is boring

Conscious rap is boring
!https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-imgYV2fysc!https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UXe_WHbZnKUyea maybe he's on of the best example of this on the new tip (Even if i don't return to the project that much). Lupe is probably the best. I'm not a fan of the production at times even though I think its good and i respect the project (the film too) and the artistry behind it.
i think some find "conscious rap corny" is because its too didactic any not creative enough in its lyricism or production. There's a pocket to fit where your voice isn't annoying, your tone of delivery isn't annoying, your not acting holier than thou, and there's some call and response element where you're not only being listened to but people can rap along with you
i wonder what topaz does next cus on ig he called this the best rap album from that year recently, n i wonder if he thinks that about whatever hes got coming next (i saw him walking around south st seaport earlier this year
)
there's also something to be said about people who are without responsibility and less cemented in their morals and lifestyle, and music choice syncing up with that
a lot of other good points made in this thread

Excellent thread @op
Sounds like niggas got dumbed down but ok
Is the concusses that the entirety of hip hop needs to be conscious? There are niggas who are conscious rapping today. The onus on us to listen to em if we really about it.
It feels too derivative and forced more often than not. I don’t want to listen to some suburban nerd doing his best Nas or Eminem impression
@op dumbass...
when people say it's boring, they're usually not talking subject matter, but sound.
also think about the label "conscious rap". what kind of person willingly identifies with that? some guy who thinks his stuff is intellectually stimulating, unlike all these other low iq un-conscious rappers? I mean you can see how, just off the name alone, you're already dealing with some lowkey pretentious bullshit. There's definitely a "holier-than-thou" atmosphere around that space.
Also, your flag-bearers are J "snooze" Cole, Logic, Joyner Lucas, and Cordae. Now, I like some of Cole music, but look at the rest of that list and tell me u rlly have no clue why ktt doesn't like "conscious rap"
I suggest u go check out the slums dudes. these guys take their damn time writing a song, and u can tell in the lyrics. plus, the sounds they go for are actually interesting and exciting. but they don't call themselves "conscious rap", so maybe you haven't considered them. For the record, I've never seen anyone on ktt hating on their s*** either.

Slums just Griselda for people who read half a Frantz Fanon book
