Conscious lyrics over trap beats are “corny” because you’re supposed to take them seriously
Ofc talking about shooting up the opps’ grandma’s house doesn’t actually make people go and do that, because it’s something people know they’re not supposed to “take seriously”
But you can’t replace them with something that you are supposed to take seriously, because that distracts people from the enjoyability of pure distraction
edit: @hanshan precisely to your last reply, its the attempt to demand more than a surface level engagement that repels people
"the beats/flows/melodies that most conscious rappers use in general are far less interesting than the flows/melodies southern rappers use and beats from west coast producers or beats from southern producers"
but there are conscious southern rappers tho that use those same type of beats tho....
and i don’t like them either
Because anti-intellectualism has taken over the country and this board
Because a lot of fans use music as a way of escapism, while conscious rap, or conscious anything really, forces one to look at himself and the world in a deeper way. And that s*** is not perceived as ''fun'', generally.
People are brought up with the idea that life is supposed to be nothing but a fun experience, rather than an all encompassing journey riddled with highs and lows. This way of seeing things is then also projected onto the way one experiences music.
People want to be picky about literally anything in life, rather than trying to enjoy things.
Sidenote: also, niggas just troll a lot. They know damn well some of these 'conscious albums' are good and hard rap music, but they're just having fun evoking some of yalls reactions. It's childish, but I can't be mad at one trying to enjoy himself, I guess.
I love more so introspective and self aware rap. I don’t like using conscious rap to describe that because people have stigmatized it to just be “woke”. It’s a harder juggling act in my opinion. Bigger ambition which means I hold it to a higher standard too. Fine line between lecturing (which can be a bit annoying) versus introspection (rapper taking personal experience and what he or she learned and felt from it). I think the messaging on the latter is what I appreciate the most.
To execute it and bring something insightful and enjoyable is really difficult to do. So I appreciate it when it’s done right. When you’re a bit more well read and have processed life, sometimes you outgrow the “lecturing” rap that doesn’t give any personal grounding because you know better and don’t need to hear a song version of it that’s shallow or superficial. It’s easy to scoff at that with age! BUT, then I remember when I was younger and that type of stuff would’ve motivated me to actually look into some topics. So I still appreciate it in some form as it could be for a younger audience coming into their own.
Like ironically enough you can find “conscious rap” from a lot of rappers who you wouldn’t think are “conscious rappers”. 21 Savage “Dead People” Kodak “Day for Day” etc etc so many examples like this.
the mr morale hate is agenda driven and reactionary, kendrick is the rare sort of conscious artist that can strike the middle ground of instilling messages + unique concepts in his music, while making them still musically interesting and enjoyable
other conscious artists on the other hand, they might have fantastic technical ability, or have great messages in their music etc. but it's usually not something that you really want to go out of your way to listen to (e.g Aesop Rock, Immortal Technique, Rapsody etc.)
Mr morale is in that same bucket
i think you're overcomplicating it
i think most people who like trap for instance dont like it mainly cus of the themes. Most people just like it cus they think it sounds good
Subconscious doesn’t lie
Ya dad was listening to Julio Foolio freestyle and started reminiscing on his dead homies? Either you lying or you 4 years old lol
Or maybe i just never heard of that freestyle but lmao (not laughing at ya dad just imagining a ktt poster having this convo with his dad)

He listens to what the kids are talking bout to get an understanding of what they like (idk why either)
But he saw it from those trending tiktoks that had the part where he was namedropping all those dead kids.

and once again I ask for the umpteenth time what are the non-conscious rappers doing that are unique?
People already getting tired of NY drill style of sampling lol.
NY drill was another unique sound that came. Obviously now it’s drained out.
My point applies for ALL styles of rap btw
but what do the people actually like?
Niggas already said conscious rappers come off corny rapping on popping beats.
So what them niggas supposed to do?
I think a perfect reference of what a new person who makes conscious music should study is DAMN. Songs like FEAR is a very interesting way to display it

somebody was literally just saying alchemist beats don't bump in this thread tho lol.
Nigga don't uplift me. Wit rap tho it ain too often that somebody can present a nuanced conscious point and it not come off preachy. If i wanted a sermon from my music id go to church. If your going to teach and relate with your music you need to do it well, actually have sumn to say. Plenty of albums that do that, usually ends up being the ones the majority and like too much at first.
"nigga dont uplift me" is wild
Appreciate the honesty but man thank god niggas did NOT have this type of mentality listening to music in the 80s and 90s.
Imagine niggas calling Grandmaster Flash's The Message "a sermon from the church" or anything Public Enemy ever dropped.

Conscious lyrics over trap beats are corny?
$ilkmoney would disagree. Over trap beats and cloud rap beats
yeah they're pretty cool from what i heard, big fan of death grips too
Clppng gets into ultra lyrical territory and it's like listening to a good book
Because anti-intellectualism has taken over the country and this board
the more I read replies the more I realize them cracka ceos knew what the f*** they was doing playing the long game programming its audience into not f***ing with conscious rap no more.
Arrested Development would've never popped off in this era
y’all should stop trying to convince people mr morale was great music, s*** was just alright…

I’m just speaking to the phenomenon that OP was talking abt where ppl think that
I don’t personally think that/I agree $ilkmoney are dope
Im a production guy
Conscious rap doesnt emphasize production as much as I want it to
Im not gonna say that the rap I like is better though
