It refers to successful suicides and not actual attempts. Men are more likely to be extreme with their methods due to their nature.

Imagine 100 people in a room, 50 of them are women and 50 are men. 3 women commit 5 suicide attempts each and one succeeds. 5 men commit 2 suicide attempts each and 3 succeed. There you got 15 suicide attempts from women with one successful while you have 10 suicide attempts from men with 3 successful. That’s kinda how it is in real life.

Women’s suicide attempts seem like a cry for help, are really done in a heated moment and are sometimes a response to an acutely emotional period. Men’s suicide attempts come after a long time of suffering, the goal is only to disappear and their act is deliberate.
