it means you aren’t paying attention
what the f*** are you talking about
We used to build s*** in this country, now we just put our hands in the next guys pocket
Frank really wasn’t missing that whole season
what does this mean
Shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Mad Men had a backdrop of a particular culture that was the focus for the series that also gave a glimpse into the life and times. Many instances throughout the series there was implicit commentary on the cultures the shows focused on. Showing the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of the cultures and the times. This gave the shows, in my opinion, more interesting moments and set pieces throughout the series.

thank you for actually explaining and not just trying to sound smart
Not sure if I agree with the last statement but I see how that can play in a big factor in enjoying it,especially The Wire
what the f*** are you talking about
it’s pretty clear to anyone who truly appreciate these shows
3 of the 4 shows in op explore a greater understanding of society and chooses to convey their message through a unique lens that’s appreciated decades after their conclusion
BB doesn’t really do that. It’s just well written, well acted fictional story. Nothing deeper to it
statements like this kind of expose those who miss entirely what makes the wire so special
The main character of The Wire is Baltimore itself
Sopranos
Wire
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
But I love them all and life isn’t as great once you’ve finished watching them
Game of Thrones would’ve been in this convo
This is an insane thing to say fr.
Frank Sobotka is literally one of the best characters in the show & it gave us the Greek
But besides those characters, the way the docks & the union were tied into the d*** game is brilliant. This is the season where the Wire let loose of being restricted to strictly street s*** & allowed for more systems in society to be dissected.
Season 2 has that slight sopranos dynamic with the family but way less cartoonish, straight up human trafficking fallout + crucial reckonings from the first season
The main character of The Wire is Baltimore itself
This to me is why it’s better than sopranos although it has maybe has the same amount of iffy seasons, the social commentary is a different level

Also it depends on what you're looking for with each show.
For realistic, poignant social commentary, The Wire is unbeatable.
For character study mixed with some dark comedy, The Sopranos is really hard to surpass.
For nail-biting tension, Breaking Bad will satisfy the itch
BB has incredibly smart writing and the way they pull things together and make the smallest details important several episodes or seasons later is crazy great show to rewatch
Interesting, since another person said it didn’t hold up for them upon rewatching! Mostly I’ve heard that you end up empathizing with Skyler way more the second time around, haha. I stopped in the middle of the Gus season years ago, I need to rewatch it and finish it.
idk because i haven't seen sopranos yet and need to watch more of the wire but not mad men
and f*** em for taking it off netflix too
even if i wanted to give it a second chance

Very well stated
