There is no victory in songs like Regrets, You Must Love Me, Lucky Me, Soon You’ll Understand, Where Have You Been, list goes on
It’s great but I also think Hov is at a point (and I think he intuitively recognizes this without actually knowing) that he’s in a tough spot to keep his subject matter fresh and relevant
Him being a billionaire and rapping about black excellence and generational wealth obviously wasn’t the whole album but also that worked in the first wake of the Trump era when there was still a lot of hope and energetic opposition to the Trump admin
Fast forward to 2026 the cultural legacy of the Obama era liberalism as well as the general cynicism of American populace to wealth inequality means it might not be enough in a post-Covid world to keep up the same “just invest” while Hov is embodying the very system that’s entrapping his race.
It’s also why I think on Written Testimony he’s taking a more backseat approach in Jay’s world while also getting slightly more philosophical/spiritual in his raps
Hopefully he goes that direction if he drops a new project. Thats also why I think he constantly says he doesn’t want to drop music and hasn’t felt it was appropriate
I think you underestimate what self-reflection is.
It's facing and expressing uncomfortable truths about yourself.
Jay Z is an excellent poet, but his appeal is that he paints more vivid pictures than the average dope boy turned millionaire.
I'll ask this again, what has Jay Z revealed to you about himself that doesn't paint him a good/sympathetic light?
I'm sure I understand exactly what you're asking, and so are others. I don't think Jay is the greatest example, but we'll agree to disagree.

So gifted poet talking about life as a dope boy turned millonaire?
Don't get me wrong, I feel the same frustration with Nas when he talks about empty pan-africanism or Eminem when he raps about how great he is at rapping.

Fair.

None of those songs I’ve mentioned talk about him being a dope boy turned millionaire you’re just yapping

What's Lucky Me about?
it's a good album but it spawned a genre of corny white rap fan post where they think every rapper over the age of 40 needs to be rapping about paying their taxes.
Crine
It's a good album for sure
Don't really listen to it on the regular, but if you take the time to listen to it, pretty solid album
My daddy left us and now im rich as f*** isn't introspection, it's the same braggy, self-aggrandizing s*** he's said throughout most of his career.
Nigga did you even listen to the lyrics of this cant be life? Retarded post and user
What's Lucky Me about?
About how he doesn't want his mother to bury him and he told the judge he couldn't budge it was him or me and I ain't tryna be hard but I'm guilty as charged
He says on the track he prays that none of his nephews grow up to be stars
How is that not reflection
About how he doesn't want his mother to bury him and he told the judge he couldn't budge it was him or me and I ain't tryna be hard but I'm guilty as charged
And that's not "hustler who used to move weight turned millionare"?
Can you read?

That's what qualifies as reflection to you?

I know in the back of your mind you're conjuring ways to hem me
Leave my friends in a circle pouring out Henny
But G's is heaven bound so how I'm gon' receive
Anything y'all pour to the ground next time throw it up
And ain't nothing changed so even in my afterlife I show it up
Don't grieve for me, my art remains
Like a dart from the speaker to your heart
Spiritually through the portal now my words is immortal
Don't plan to leave without a fight, I plant a seed I give life
Though I can't see past the girl's greed to call her wife
Next time you're thinking heist better be precise
'Cause I'm fully prepared, one of us is gon' leave here
I have no regrets even though I won't see grow
My godson Boogie, Sonny and Remo, lucky me
Literal entire 3rd verse is him talking about his death, and how he hopes that the words in his work can speak to the people he loves when he no longer can
That's what qualifies as reflection to you?
Loool, okay
What qualifies as reflection for you man?? You gotta be trolling lol
