watering my garden and this finch sitting at the edge of my pond just didnt give a hoot about me being right up next to him. judging by the feathers and inability to so much as move I knew he was at his last days.

but the neighborhood cats come to drink at this pond and I didn't want his last moments to be at the claws of a cat so I gently picked him up (he put up zero resistance) and placed him in a box with sheets as bedding and a small bit of water and moved him to my mosquito-net-enclosed porch. that way he can hear the chirps and whistles from his peoples as he comfortably drifts off.

this has me quite emotional. a single life, even one like this finch, is more valuable than all the money in the world. and especially more valuable than a moment of sensory pleasure for us.

wings are for flying and legs are for walking.

all us animals deserve the opportunity to have death slowly envelope us with a gentle warmth having lived a long and beautiful life, and to be laid to rest with dignity and care.
