True but i wasn't gonna say it
Donda chant must have really gotten you pumped. Revolutionary track filled with substance drake’s lacking. It’s also the most intriguing intro ever known to mankind
Kanye stans are the most pretentious idiotic people on the planet
At least it keeps me awake at the wheel papiangel
Who influenced that popularity dork? Let me guess you won’t give Drake that credit either
beenie man, bounty killah, and sean paul.
I forget drake fans don't acknowledge dancehall before 2016.
Yeah I guess stealing Cudis & Travis’s influence is so experimental. Taking Keef’s influence is so experimental. Taking New Drills artists wave is so experimental.
I. Think. Donda. Is. Mid. Too.

Dancehall was at it’s peak popularity in 2016 because of Sean Paul and Beenie Man? Lmao do you know the difference between 2003 and 2016
His music quality went down because he stopped using writers (not talking about ghost writers).
He is basically the only songwriter credit on his songs after More Life, maybe as a way to prove himself and others he never needed writers.
Maybe that's why it all sounds similar because he doesn't get outside ideas for songs.

you gotta be one miserable mf. broke the streaming record for most plays in one day and you're acting like nobody gives a f*** about it LMAO
I think there are some valid criticisms on Drake’s music but overall I’m very satisfied with his current output and if you put the CLB era up with any other era of his it’s more than competitive

In what ways does it sound similar?
Well written. I disagree with After Dark cause I think he brought back what you were referring to as the good singing Drake on that one personally.
I don’t think he has to really change his subject matter moreso than stop emulating other artists. Drake was just Drake from 2007-2015 and after WATTBA he decided to hop on what was poppin in ATL/South and continues to do that and he just sounds forced. It’s like he knows they’re hot so he has to keep up and he just doesn’t do it properly.
I wish he would work with people that would inspire him better tbh like I’m not a Cole fan but compare his track with Lil Baby to Drake’s and you’ll see that Cole and even Kanye utilize them better than Drake does where he just straight up emulates or doesn’t keep up period.
I was a huge stan from hearing him on Comeback Season til 2015 and it’s just been a downhill ride where I feel like I’m growing out of him mainly cause he chooses to not grow up and mature with his music anymore.
Thanks man. I like After Dark and I even like a couple things about Finesse and Peak but they still all have this weird autotune, nasally singing that I just can’t rock with. Ruins the songs for me. Even though he’s not a great singer he still would make it work have some of R&B or Pop songs. Like compare his singing on Brand New or Shot For Me to Peak or Ratchet Happy Birthday.
I really do think he needs to switch up his subject matter. It’s been going on 10 years now and he still hasn’t it changed it much at all I completely agree about the whole ATL wave he keeps using. I honestly think he does it good but now we’ll enough to make truly great songs. Songs that should be on his albums should definitely not be those songs.
Like I’d have no problem if songs like Girls Want Girls, In The Bible, Way 2 Sexy or N 2 Deep were him being on them as a feature and not actually his songs. I think it’s good way to showcase that he can do what others can do well enough to be enjoyable and not sound out of place. Show cases his versatility. But it 1000% shouldn’t be in his albums. Songs for his albums should be reserved for showcases HIS style and or any style he does the absolute best.
Like you said I wish he’d collaborate more with people that pushes him creatively. I was really hoping that one of the Benny songs was on CLB I was so excited about it. I was also excited about Yebba being in the album I was so curious of what a song with them sounds like but she just had an interlude to herself. I hate when he does that it’s like he is shying away from anything that would make him make different type of music anymore. Drake ain’t growing as an artist.
I agree his delivery has become a bit boring over the years. The music is still good but go listen to how passionate he sounded on every project from 2009-2015 to now. It’s night and day. Feel like he was a much much more charismatic performer prior to Views.
Other than that he needs to focus on making truly engaging albums again. There’s A LOT of good s*** on CLB that gets lost in between boring ass unnecessary ass songs. It can really take you out of it as a listener, especially if you aren’t a big Drake fan to begin with.
And why was this album even called Certified Lover Boy? What was the point of a year long rollout with delays? There’s no sonic or thematic through line in any way, just a bunch of scatter shot ideas that feel like they were put together in the last few months. Idk like I said the music is still good for the most part but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t expect more.
He hasn’t really evolved since VIEWS. Everything feels so...corporate and soulless now. Even though CLB has tracks I genuinely like, as an overall album it’s pretty meh and I don’t think it’s going to be appreciated like VIEWS down the line.
Facts. I was so worried when he said people was going to hate in CLB like they did Views and that it was “music to evolve to”. Like I don’t think he truly understood why people hated on Views and why people grew to love it. Literally everything about Views was perfect aside from the rapping. Besides on on Weston Road Flow and the outro the rapping was very few and when he did it wasn’t the best.
But the production?? F***ing beautiful felt like a movie. The singing songs??? Feel No Ways, Fire & Desire, One Dance, Too Good, Controlla, Redemption???? Some of his best songs. All Views needed was to take out filler songs like With You (give it to Party), Faithful (give it to dvsn), Grammys, (give it to future), and Pop Style (give it to Khaled or a dumpster truck) and replace them with some top tier rap songs that preferably have different subject matter from his usually s*** and Views would have been his magnum opus and one of the best albums of all time.
CLB has so many flaws. Way too many things wrong with it. It doesn’t contain any of his best songs, the production for the most part is boring, dry and lacks individuality, the rap songs are good but his boring ass flow on most of them and the not as sharp and witty lyrics stop them from being anywhere near his best in that category of songs he makes, the singing songs aren’t nearly as good as most of his past ones. NAH CLB ain’t gunna grow on most people like Views did man. Drake truly delusional if he thinks that. CLB the definition of some mid.
I know Drake is worried if he takes a real hiatus that he’ll lose his spot in the game, but the impact will be much greater if he comes back with something undeniably great versus something his diehard fans will go to war over.
To build on this I also think he’s afraid to experiment or at least deviate outside of the sound of his last couple albums because he’s built up this whole “No. 1 on top of the game superstar” reputation. In order to stay on top we’ll keep receiving audio pig slop for the masses
Not enough rap tbh
I go back n forth on this. I feel like So Far Gone and Take Care were close to this level of singing heavy but ultimately, I think Drake gives us the EPs and the features to make up for the lack of rapping on his albums and that makes me okay with it. We got Lemon Pepper Freestyle, Wants & Needs, Seeing Green, and Having Our Way before this. Drizzy gave us bars this year
Difference being a lot of criticisms only GET popular not because they’re actually valid, but because people don’t like him and those same people just parrot it endlessly.
For example, the whole “culture vulture” thing.
but people don't like him for a reason. his music doesn't do anything for me personally? and that reason is that every album for the last half decade has been more of the same
can you find some different beats? sure, but when you press play on a Drake album you know exactly what you're gunna get. when you press play on a Kanye album, or a Tyler album, or a Gambino album you have no idea what you're about to get.
is it okay to like Drake? of course, he just doesn't do anything for some people and that's okay
Drake didn’t influence dancehall music to the mainstream in 2016?
I'd say no. It was popular beforee 2016. He helped introduce it to people who may have not been alive in the 2000s where beanie man, sean paul and even nina sky had big dancehall tracks in the us but so did bieber and so did sia.
