You can't fall in love and land on your feet
You won't smell the roses if you never plant a seed

Asteroid City symbolizes the mind during the grieving process, the crater is the hole/emptiness in your life when you lose somebody that is really close to you. Every grieve starts with a shock event, the meteor impact which stands for the sudden death of a loved one.

The alien takes the asteroid (the actual cause of the hole, the cause of the grieve, the asteroid is the death. Then the alien returns it after grieving is done. Someone said the asteroid had been indexed after the alien returns it. So you gave the loss a place in your life but the hole will always remain..

Each character in Asteroid City represents a specific emotion or phase within the grieving proces, mirroring the five stages of grief. There are 5 stages of grief: It starts with the “Shock Event”, the meteor impact that slams a hole in your heart/life-> metaphor for when someone dies unexpectedly, then comes denial-> he didn’t tell his kids for 3 weeks, his kids stand for ignorance and denial, then comes resistance the general, catharsis and lack of drive played out by scarlett johansson and then finally acceptance.

Every character represents an emotion within the grieving mind. By granting each emotion a place in both the heart and the mind, one can eventually depart from Asteroid City. However, before moving forward, individuals must undergo the "quarantine of grief," a necessary period of processing and healing. That’s why they’re all in quarantine in Asteroid City..
