Well, either I was dismissive, or you’re insecure. If I was dismissive, I apologize.

I don't even know what you're talking about at this point.

To reiterate, the opinions you allegedly want are on the prior pages of this thread.

You don't need to frame your opinions as questions. It's okay to use declarative sentences.

    Ummm.
People have always accused Wes of being an unemotional filmmaker, and I’ve always thought that was a load of phooey, cause every film has had at least one moment that cuts right to my heart…

    But this one?
I dunno guys. Postmodernism is cool and all, but it’s only cool after you’ve already got attached to the primary story. The stuff about our loneliness and anxiety in the universe felt… trite? People say this works better on rewatch, but what exactly is there to entice me to come back? This is Anderson’s weakest crop of characters. Am I missing something?

It’s funny that this film is about first contact, cause by my estimation, it just might be Anderson’s first miss

even without the themes the movie was hilarious and the atmosphere was great imo

We should be telling niggas like Hype Williams how much their style and eye is missed in film before we beg for inclusion in the white mans joint

That being said it would be cool to see a “black” version of the Wes Anderson aesthetic but we shouldn’t beg him to do it lol

wes anderson one of the whitest directors making the whitest movies w the whitest characters that take place in the whitest settings

it’s like asking why there weren’t any black ppl in crazy rich asians

In the face of absurdity and impending doom, what do the characters turn to?

Love (the initials on the moon / the dance with the cowboy) and Art (The play itself / The field trip kid’s various art pieces). It actually mirrors how things transpired in the pandemic. When people couldn’t work, they really had to confront how reliant they were on those things to create meaning in their lives. The movie is sweet in this way. Reminds me of the Timothee Chalamet short from The French Dispatch.

I’m just imaging that big ass cast riding out to that set every morning, breaking bread together, telling stories, and jamming

    Wes Anderson’s A Serious Man

It has a similar anxiety and sense of foreboding. A lot of Coen bros movies tackle the meaninglessness of living. That might be part of the reason why this material didn’t knock me out. I think where this movie shines is how it refracts that idea through the anxieties of the 50s, and then parallels it to the present. The mushroom cloud is a really evocative piece of imagery.

Most of the characters are like minimalist sketches of characters.

I wonder how much the set and coloring is drawing me back in. I could live in that s***. Definitely one of his best aesthetics.
