It’s cool that subcultures are being represented, no knock against that. However, there are other things in music today that cause a divided audience. For instance if you Tory Lanez your an “loser” for example. With the rise of social media, music isn’t simply being enjoyed for music anymore. There is often a political backdrop associated with music, especially if it’s mainstream. Often songs blow up for other things besides the song itself. So with this backdrop, it’s harder for people universally to like a song. That’s typically what a song of the summer did. The idol worship part was a bit excessive imo.

Cause every year there are multiple “songs of the summer”, just the one that’s the biggest has usually been the one with the big hook on a lively party beat that everyone was listening to since the start of the summer. This is what we’re used to the song of the summer being, so we just feel like it isn’t one
