upscale yakiniku spot, course menu

this was fire--the beef replaced the rice in the futomaki
another firefly squid showing on top of this vinegary noodle thing
i never know what this noodle is but i guess its sort of kinda similar to mul naengmyeon maybe

oxtail was crazy--super tender, super fragrant and yum
beef tongue was also rly rly good
they finished w a salmon ikura rice or ochazuke and they made us onigiri w the leftovers
overall was tasty, and a lot a lot of food
everything grilled over binchotan
dessert kinda flopped but its ok
there was more food but im too lazy to post u get the gist
小山
toro handrolls
this spot is more izakaya style but they always r really generous w toro lol like look at how their toro handrolls is half ootoro half chutoro diced not minced and theres so much toro
good
i fl like the other stuff they have is decent but not mindblowing, can be a bit of a wait tho

taian men
3 michelin stars
honestly sitting for this was kinda torture lol i was really dying to leave by the end it was an unrelenting barrage of food
this was the second beest best course
the amuse bouche:
this was the best course, steamed egg custard w toasted mini croutons:

"risotto" but the rice is celeriac so its rly not a risotto at all but it is creamed so i guess
white asparagus prep, asparagus is covered in 3 sauces. i forget what brown and green were, but yellow was egg yolk gel
another celeriac thing, but this time pretending to be noodles
toast w uni and some other s*** on top
kinda bland pork tenderloin w 2 other pork preparations in the back. all 3 porks were sourced from dff spots eg spain, canada, something something
dessert was good

canele was super crunchy and but not very airy, still good tho
honestly the person doing their chocolates carried these lego men are filled w like a giant bar of watermelon poprocks its so good
overall it was cool but idk i wouldnt recommend it tbh it was kinda insufferable and nothing was spectacular or memorable really beside the extreme insistence on replacing yummy starches w celeriac of all things
omitting a lot of the food bc u get the gist
cantonese food
福祿居

their flagship dish is this weird like... abomination
pumpkin foam, covering a pile of tofu and avocado/cilantro cream.... rly bizarre and not for me
but the tofu fish (thats the literal translation of the chinese name, not sure what its called in eng) was fire. chicken was cool, the chicken feet were cool
i think the charsiu pork was really fire tho--not a typical charsiu pork at all, this was super fatty, juicy, sweet, and fragrant tho
like its unfair to judge other charsiu against this one its a diff breed
on the top floor in a mall like almost all good upscale canto food in shanghai, this spots pretty new tho
利苑
radish puff--sooo good so flaky and so gooey on the inside perfect 10/10

great beef balls, good squab, good roast pork, good rice rolls
fried rice is bland tho (but they can give u free xo sauce)
and the custard buns were aiiiight
they have a top tier beef chow fun though but they ran out (u can call ahead to reserve)
they make the noodles in house and everything
also on the top floor of a mall
家全七福酒家
another top floor of a mall sitch
scallion puff things--super good super fragrant yum
weekend only roast suckling pig, it was good but no meat on it lolol
turnip cakes were really really good probs best turnip cakes ive ever had
good dan tat but not as good as tang court used to have
good fish
rly fragrant lotus leaf wrapped rice thing
think they have a michelin star

Jinya was FIREEEE. Not pictured was lemonade which was godly.
Spicy tonkatsu ramen with chashu pork (butter, spicy sauce, bean sprouts, green onion, seasoned egg, bamboo shoots) 10/10
Takoyaki on top of the fluffiest whipped eggs. Very rich. 8/10 because the eggs couldve used some salt.
Fried chicken 10/10
Pork gyoza 9/10
Spicy Creamy Shrimp Tempura 9/10

this is a spot in suzhou specializing in suzhou small eats

excellent pork filled tangyuan (xian rou tang yuan). the pork had so much flavor and the absolute perfect texture.

we also got the
homecooked food at my grandma's house

they went f***ing crazy w this

zongzi frm some random zongzi dude we have the plugon look at how f***ing good this looks
ningbo dumplings (inside chen huang miao aka city god temple, near lu bo lang)

we got crab roe guan tang bao (giant soup dumpling filled w only soup),
3 types of tangyuan: pork, pork and shepherds purse (ass), and black sesame. their tangyuan were pretty mid overall but the actual mochi layer was rly good. if you ask around for xian rou tang yuan (pork tang yuan) ull find this spot but its just aight
savory pastry from lu bo lang inside chen huang miao (city god temple)

we also got a guan tang bao from them for comparison and it wasnt good
we also got a third guan tang bao from someother other other spot and it was even worse....
also got this giant fried chinese chive cracker thing inside the temple, super oily but the chvie was fragrant. didnt finish it tho soy oily
bought one of these mochi balls filled w pork floss and like bean paste or something. it was cool but its supposed to be mugwort mochi but the mugwort wasnt coming thru at all. ask for the fresher one bc they will sell u the old sad one if u dont ask for the newer one
savory sticky rice ball (ci fan tuan / xian fan tuan) from a random like..... a literal hole in the wall breakfast spot. theres a lot of these random hole in the wall breakfast spots that serve long tangs en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longtang u just gotta look for it. theyre kinda disappearing tho w all the real estate redevelopment
this one was aighhhht idk why but the pork floss was sweet and they didnt give me the right pickled mustard greens lol
plus the you tiao (chinese donut) was squished but i dont want it squished
more you tiao on the side, plus savory tofu pudding (dou hua) and sweet soy milk
soy milk and everything is housemade. soy products were 10/10

“name is written on the bowl”

name written on the bottom right box corner (guang ming cun)

their zongzi flopped tho it was just aight
side by side img w the other zongzi i posted that was way better bc it was just fattier and more yummy
plain pork (xian rou)
date and walnut -- not good, not very fresh
pork and crab roe -- dece but not as good as plain pork tbh
red bean-- also kinda stale
the plain pork ones r the bestseller, u gotta wait in line for it bc they sell outta one giant pan then u gotta wait for them to cook the next batch. So theyre super super fresh not even 1 minute out the pan
30 min wait if u go at 9:30-10:00 for the first 2 batches, 45 min to an hr if u go later. during big holidays it an be a 5 hr wait tho apparently.

home cooking -- poached chicken, various greens, chicken soup, shanghai take on mapo tofu (aka super non spicy lol), lions head meatballs (just called that bc of the size) over like blossoms and bamboo shoots
also some pork belly thrown in
red braised pork belly and eggs, chinese celery stir fried w bean curd cake, shanghai russian borscht, microwave rice
小桃园 (its a mini chain)

still a mediocre savory rice ball (their pork floss is also weirdly sweet) but everything else really hit. top plate is you tiao on left, da bing on right (these crispy sesame flatbread things), two bowls of sweet soy milk, a basket of steamed meat buns, savory soy milk, savory tofu pudding (dou hua)
everything else was rly good
U eat the da bing and you tiao by folding the da bing around the youtiao like a carb on carb hot dog
胥城大厦 noodle spot we hit every time we go to suzhou
not a huge wait but very good noodles. this time it was super peppery, so asked for clear soup to just balance it and they obliged
good classic smoked fish (again not actually smoked, just the name), good pork belly, good shan si (eel), decent shrimps, great pickles, and great noodles
final shanghai post
dont know the resto name but its in suzhou
duck soup, these crispy fried river shrimp thats a specialty of suzhou,
fried red braised taro (super good)
these alternate spring rolls filled with shepherds purse instead of cabbage
red braised river fish
red braised eel
siam memory for thai food

really good, super super flavorful tom yum soup
good, fairly mild coconut crab curry
weird bean sprout salad w shaved frozen foie gras on top lol
it uses like 9 diff bean sprouts ig but idk id skip its just a bunch of bean sprouts in the end

chongqing style hot pot
Names in the bowl
We got the mild spice and s*** had me DYING !!!!!!
ft lamb w and without cartilage, beef stomach
these weird bamboo shoots that are somehow hard to get or something idk
and free dessert for when it gets 2 spicy
One is bing fen, the other is frozen tangyuan
@boruto_dad I love your posts sm.
