I'd say so. Britney's tunes were everywhere and all over the world and they werent carried by a deranged fanbase mass buying the song. Sure, payola probably played a part, but her songs were very good regardless.

Taylor seems much much bigger but without any massive classic tunes that everybody likes, which Britney did have

Grey's Anatomy was drawing like 50 or 60 million viewers every week. The biggest show now draws like 18 million max.

Ali Frazier got viewed by 300 million people worldwide, live. Less people watched Mayweather-Pacquaio and that set the PPV record. Tens of millions pirated Mayweather-McGregor. Still absolutely dwarfed by TV boxing in the 50s/60s on any given weekend. There were 3 TV channels.

Look at whatever you want. There's a dilution in audience base for pretty much everything. That's why movies are measured in box office and not tickets sold. More Chinese people see a Chinese movie you have never heard of than Avengers. That happens all the time.

The amount of people that saw Gone With By Wind

    who had a higher peak?

    Taylor or Eminem

    Eminem easily.

Nigga sold 20+ million albums worldwide back to back and had a movie that outgrossed Space Jam at the box office.

Peak Eminem was on another level even though Taylor is easily bigger now.

she was massive but no, in this era Taylor surpassed her popularity. more commercial success with sales and record breaking tour + longevity

there's no metric other than feeling that you can say Britney's peak popularity was bigger

Maybe it's cause my listening habits have become much more insulated than they were in Britney's prime but i can only name one Taylor song. i could name at least half a dozen Britney. don't doubt that the craft is there or whatever but she doesn't seem to be touching Britney's run of iconic pop classics.

Everybody and their auntie was buying Eminem's albums and knew he was special. I see more people annoyed by Taylors ubiquitousness than dazzled by her talents.

She had more reach. Black girls was f***ing with Britney when I was growing up. Idk if Taylor Swift got the non-whites in her pocket like that. Certainly got the white washed ones though.

I'm on Bumble and quite a few Indian and Hispanic girls love Taylor tbh.

well youd definitely recognize a few more than youd be able to name at least. is Shake It Off the only one you can name? We are never ever getting back together?

and yeah maybe does depend on listening habits. environment, radio too i guess. i was surprised both my parents were able to recognize like 10+ of the big Taylor hits and its not like they even had a daughter to expose them to it or anything. just the gradual hugeness for such a long time

Taylor is also midway between being a singles artist and album artist, where there are plenty huge hits but the big fans still gravitate towards the whole albums

Would you consider them white washed? You can like Taylor Swift and not be white washed btw.

Taylor’s biggest market other than the US is Asia

I think Taylor definitely has a bigger machine working for her, but that’s half because the music industry is so much bigger than it was in the early 00s. Her marketing is always at 100

Yeah Shake It Off the only one and I haven't actually heard it much, just aware of it. Lorde, Lana, Billie etc all had songs I heard all over the place but I've never noticed Taylor

Just like we have to adjust for inflation when discussing money from a bygone era comparing to this time… we need to do for information

Britney was a mega star in a time when it was way more limited, you had to physically go buy cd’s

    Meh

Y'all just being delusional/stuck in the past honestly and I hate defending Taylor.

She is selling like 20x more physical albums than anyone else right now. Britney was never dominating her peers like THAT, let alone consistently after almost 20 years of doing it.

Taylor going into her third decade (2000s, 2010s, 2020s) as the biggest artist in the world.

She selling out damn movie theaters with a tour, has sold out stadiums in every continent, can release an album from 10 years ago all over again and doing 1 million pure first week. Britney was never doing any of that.

She is the the closest example to success back then 'when you had to go out and buy stuff' and her numbers objectively putting Britney's to shame. At this point Taylor will still be 50 years old pulling huge numbers because she knew how to market herself long term and not rely on selling s***or having disposable/trendy radio music which is usually what hurts artists when they get older.
