I love theaters as much as the next man but it isn’t movie studios job to keep theaters a float, especially with what’s going on. Studios can’t worry about keeping their movies a float AND theaters. Theaters have to also carry their own weight and figure out ways to stay open while following the new rules and guidelines.

If anyone is to blame it’s the government for lack of funding.

This is right, but the movie studios are setting a dangerous example for consumers. Without theaters, either the films go down in production value or the streaming costs go way up.

movies about to be like sports now

if you want to watch it for free alone stream it

if you want to pay to watch it with strangers with similar interest then buy a ticket....it's a win win

Streaming it and inviting people over to watch it with you

I think it’s a damn if you do damn if you don’t situation. It’s just hard right now with the lack of options, as a consumer it sucks seeing anticipated movies keep getting pushed back. If they treat this as a one year event and then once the world is back to normal shift things back to usual then I think we should be good.

This is a massive L not just for theaters but for cinema

This just made it much more harder to get the next Mad Max Fury Road or the next Dune. Studios aren’t going to want to put a 150 mil+ budgets into risks like those because streaming numbers can’t match box office revenue.

Going to be sad af when we just see a bunch of capeshit and fast and furious / godzilla vs some cgi crap every year along with like 5000 movies a year about how some minority group is brave

I agree this might be bad news for big blockbuster flicks if cinema does get demolished. But in your last sentence you failed to mention we will still get films like Parasite, Uncut Gems, The Lighthouse, etc. All those were the best films from 2019 that didn’t require a crazy budget and wasn’t a typical “minority group” movie. Happy medium.

whoever said theatres were on their way to being more of a concert/broadway type of thing might've been right

Its ultimately up to theaters to evolve with the times. Lots of other industries have been challenged like this before. Theaters have had the privilege of largely not having to innovate their model for well over half a century if not more. This was inevitable

People are social and still want to go out to see big spectacle movies, and studios still need theaters because thats the only way to make huge profits and justify a big budget film and salaries. This deal is a loss on each film on their slate its not desirable for anything more than increased subs. Only so much you can do when you have a slate, people aren't going to theaters, and they've been shut down for 9 months and counting in the nation's biggest markets (NYC and LA).

You can't make that much off of a big budget film on a streamer unless you use the Disney+ Mulan model, which still had losses. We aren't all of a sudden going to shift backwards. These companies want as much money as possible and when things are normal theaters would still be the method to making billions

You know, I’m just happy for art at this moment. Corporate decisions have never once negatively affected the creation, awareness or accessibility of art. If corporations know one thing, it’s art and showing it some f***ing respect. So a decision this large can only mean good things. For art, obviously.

Looking forward to the future! I ❤️ Capitalism

tbh i really like the idea of releasing streaming and theaters at the same time

i just worry about how long theaters will be able to survive with this

Studios should do pop up movies or drive ins instead of normal theaters and make it a whole ass experience. Like for a week or whatever you get a chance to see the movie on a big screen with added entertainment and design

Bruh its not that I dont care for the theater experience. Its simply me just being fine with either watching it at home or at a theater. Im not bothered either way cus I'm getting a great experience regardless. Saw Endgame in theaters and at home and both times were cool. Im not gonna s*** on someone for wanting to see it at theaters cus I get it yall like the experience of the crowd being there with you. I just think its whack how theres certain niggas in here turning their nose up like you're doing a disservice to the directors just cus you watched the film at home. Thats all

    Yes yes yes!!!!!!!!!perfectly put

    HBOMax is a dog

time to shut down all pretend theaters. all theaters only have true IMAX screens and only show movies in IMAX. only need a few theaters in every city. maybe 10-12 in major cities

people will go for the right movies

Man that would be f***ing madness.

Tickets would be sold out for weeks for a big release if there’s limited theaters.

    But I feel you.

Watching everything on my big ass tv for free instead of paying 50 bucks for a coke at the theather whew

fury road wasn't a risk it's part of a movie franchise

What he’s saying is it cost around 150 million dollars to make Fury Road. Without cinemas it’s going to be hard for studios to shell out that much money for big blockbusters if all they’re gonna see is streaming money

    Black John Wick

No, but come on now would rather watch it at home with subpar speakers. I know that some people have speakers that are damn well on par with theaters, but 100 foot screen>>>>65 inch tv.

    Not if it’s OLED

  • Dec 4, 2020

Also, this avoids people getting spoiled on social media if they didn’t go see it at a midnight release or first weekend.

  • Dec 4, 2020

I misread this and thought they were releasing all their 2021 movies on HBO Max at once lol

  • Dec 4, 2020

Damn, if theaters die or change drastically soon as more studios do the same, it feels good to have grown up in a time period where we experienced the other side

A franchise that doesn’t normally get budgets like that especially since it’s R rated
