Yes its best to look at individuals as individuals outside of their religion imo. Good people are good people, what they believe is like an afterthought. Also I would argue that a lot of the worst people who used religion as an excuse to hurt people in any way are just lying about their religion to leverage it, because it goes against every single thing pretty much all major religions stand for.
