Honestly who cares if she's likeable? The show itself is good.
I think that adds to the show, it's not a bad thing to have an unlikeable character.
How the f*** is Joel more unlikeable (at the start)? Just cuz he had a dark past? Niggas be saying anything
How is Joel not more unlikeable lol. His defining characteristic is that he's selfish, jaded, grumpy and extremely guarded. He was pretty much s***ty to Ellie for a good chunk of the game and shut down all of her attempts to relate to him at the start. Even at the end where he makes that choice, he's still very unlikeable but you can relate to him more because of his past

joel has always been an unlikable character lmao
edit:
actually haven’t played in a while. i could be wrong. maybe
like yes you can understand his choices and yes he warms up to ellie and blah blah blah but that man at the end of the day is a murderer who ruined the chance of saving the world

I guess I just am not seeing the parallels. This show went out of the way to show you how she's miserable, that's part of the character. Hates her work, hates her fans who like the work, sardonic about everything around her, a well rounded a******. This is BEFORE the apocalypse
Joel is a "normal family guy" I guess, daughter killed 1st day of apocalypse, they make that playable so you see/feel it and then he has like 15 or so years of complete societal collapse under his belt after that, doing bounty hunting/tracking s***. Has hangups over being a protective/father figure and has a child forced upon him, understandable. I just don't see the parallels tbh

I mean bro, he lost his daughter, and got 15 years of grief under his belt before another kid is forced on him, supposedly as his salvation. They're not cool with each other for MAYBE like 2 or 3 chapters, and they're cool pretty soon into that. And become damn near a familial unit.
Carol is more unlikeable by definition because her defining characteristic.....is being unlikeable! And selfish, jaded, grumpy and extremely guarded! They haven't shown us anything else really!

I never said it doesnt make sense for Joel to be the way he is in the game, it does.
But it's also not out the ordinary for Carol to be the way she is in this show after she just lost her partner and the world just ended and every other survivor has no desire to do anything about it. We never got to see much of Joel immediately after losing Sarah, but I doubt he would of been good company.
Carol before the apocalypse did show traits of being miserable like the ice hotel scene but she also did show traits of being pleasant like the book signing scene. And with her being in a conversion camp, her being a sort of miserable in her adult life makes sense the same way it did for Joel.
You're looking at it from knowing how how Joel's arc goes and knowing he starts opening up with Ellie after some time. Which is why I said "joel at the start" in my og post.
Most viral post about the show so far

I would love to hear your take on why focusing on the Mauritanian guy would be a more “interesting dynamic”, because he is by far the most one-dimensional character in the whole show
I'm talking about if the show chooses to focus on the introspective aspects of finding happiness n all that jazz. He's a more vibrant character off the lil 5 min slice we got of him. Carol is an uninteresting character to me. My investment in her is her as a vehicle to uncover the mystery of the aliens/virus. All the other interpersonal stuff going on with her, doesn't do anything for me. I understand it all, its just like ok. Nothing profound about it. It is what it is. That isn't the most engaging part of the show for me. Nothing to do with it being a slow burn.
Can’t think of characters specifically but I can think of actors who could’ve played a complete male replica version of Carol and not gotten half of the likability discourse, and probably would’ve been seen as more empathetic, and someone easier to connect to and understand as a character
Imagine if this show was lead by someone like paul giamatti, john turturo, Jeffrey wright, jason schwartzman, mark ruffalo, bill murray, john c Reilly or even Bryan Cranston or Bob Odinkirk. I feel like people would be more open and charitable to the material, and more receptive to the characters a******ish, corny standoffishness and cynicism.
Um from my perspective, on my timeline, in my social circles, I haven't really heard any criticism of the show period tbfh, let alone people complaining about the female lead. The only place I see that is here, and it's the people who love the show, coming back to report about hearing, or reading these things. Not saying these things aren't happing but just my perspective. Even ITT I feel like I'm the only person that is just lukewarm to the show, and not overtly praising it.
Carol does things that are unlikable. That ain't because she a woman. I fail to see the issue. It's not a critique of the acting, or writing. It's actually praising it.
And if we playing that put x name here; like I been saying put Jordan Peele's name on this show, and yall coming in here totally different.
Side note finally watching better call saul for the first time, midway through season 3
Vince really the goat

Damn good for you, I am so f***ing jealous. I think it’s better than BB imo. Absolutely insane he made 2 GOAT shows in the same universe. A f***ing prequel goes just as hard as the OG. Diabolical
u know what’s under it…
NO I DONT, I tried to think about it today but have no idea, I thought maybe a dead body but that seems too obvious!! What do you think it is?!

It's "obvious" cuz the show already told you what it is lol, you wouldn't have thought about it prior to the episode

Like 2 episodes into season 4 now, the show is unbelievable. So far its at least 90% as good as breaking bad, which immediately makes it top 10 OAT. Heard it finishes insanely strong too
What did Vince mean by this
