This is great. A lot of actually worth watching press and junket stuff for this film
They talk about meeting in college, and Coogler bonded with Ludwig because he was listening to a lot of Lykke Li and Little Dragon at the time

Very very few movies make their budget back the opening weekend. Given the CinemaScore the movie is bound to have great legs. I think a 3.5x multiplier is a low estimate which would put it over $200m at the box office

agreed, next weekend we r probably gonna see a great hold
can someone eli5 why studios are feeling threatened about coogler gaining ownership of his film 25 years after it releases?
25 years just seems like such a long time for the studio to have control and make money off the film.. and isn’t most of the money made from the first few years of release anyways?
why are they trippin about profits they might be able to make off this movie 25 years from now?

Individually yeah it’s probably not a big deal (Coogler himself says the deal is a one off) but I think they’re scared of the possibility of it becoming industry standard. I imagine the studios make millions in revenue by licensing their libraries to streaming services every year, a revenue stream that just wouldn’t exist in the future if every director got this deal (this is a personal aside but I don’t think every director even deserves this sort of deal. If you don’t also have a screenwriting or story credit then what real ownership claim do you have? You’re just a director-for-hire).
Then of course studios would miss out on those very few movies that do continue to make money decades later. We’re nearing the 25 year mark of the LotR trilogy and they still make a ton of money selling physical box sets.
First the Rachel Zegler smear article. And now this.
