Story and narrative are the least important part of a game
Games are meant to be played. Your fingers are meant to press the buttons in increasingly difficult and complex ways. Your brain is meant to intuit and master the systems and puzzles. It’s meant to be something you drive forward, something that will stand still if you don’t push it harder and harder. There is nothing worse than games that are meant to be “experiences” that you just sit back and watch.
Bloodborne is the platonic ideal for a video game (NOT A HOT TAKE). Every single input is deliberate and connected.
For this reason I dislike games like last of us, bioshock, rdr2. I don’t like going along with a big arcing story, it feels unsatisfying and unearned
True there are very few games I think have entertaining cutscenes to warrant them (most of Metal Gear, Dmc) but by a very large number I hate them and get bored immediately.
Pick up and play is the ideal. Cutscenes should only be there to establish the setting
Tekken would have been better if they ended the Mishima Saga at Tekken 5
Problematic but forgiven Warlord Jin Kazama was such a strange arc
Spent some time this weekend trying Breath of the Wild for the first time.
I absolutely refuse to believe this is the game that got the hype it did for the last X years
This is exactly how I felt when I played it first in 2020
I never understood it
Khazan was a breath of fresh air and had traditional soulslike players scratching their heads cus they don’t know how to be aggressive and get on some ass
Played the demo earlier this year and wasn’t all that impressed with it tbh
If it’s one thing I hate when it comes to game design, is when mobs, and bosses generally have faster, and more agile movement speed than the player character. Man I f***ing hate it.
gow 2018 is md
Was a long time hater of nu-GoW and just binged both games earlier this year. It was cool. Solid game. Definitely didn’t deserve any GOTY awards at all

i only played 4 hours of it so maybe its good later
i didnt like the forced walking and talking, and how close the camera is to Kratos just jarring

It doesn’t really get better. You pretty much have to be invested in the story or else there’s not a whole lot there. Ragnarok made slight improvements I guess

TOTK is everything that game should've been. I recommend people skip BOTW after experiencing it.

Def gotta give it more time than that tbh. One of the few soulslike where aggression is the name of the game and all that you attack 5 times, I dodge, then I attack BS goes out the window
Just straight getting up in cheeks and smoking bosses
Y?
Good gameplay mechanics but the story is cheeks and Vaas introduction is the best sequence; they only get progressively worse from there. Other issues I had were tropes like the competent guy dying very early on (Jason's brother. It's a storytelling trope I find boring in general, across all media, not just video games). Not sure if the twist worked either but
Also, and this is very specific to me, but I hate when an "island" is just a hodgepodge of ideas like it was in FC3. No sense of place, or at least it's very Hollywood. I wish there was a neater way of integrating the backstory details into the actual story instead of relegating it to the menu folders. It wasn't a glaring issue in FC2 (kind of worked better in that game, even though FC2 has worse gameplay than 3) but yeah
Good story with decent/subpar gameplay > good gameplay with a bad story
I can see that
Problematic but forgiven Warlord Jin Kazama was such a strange arc
Facts. That s*** was too try hard and made it lopsided.
Ocarina of Time
Bloodborne
The Witcher 3
???
The Witcher 3 has super boring combat mechanics
mass effect 1 sucks
