Go to Halloween Town/Christmas Town and glide through it. It’s so funny that’s it literally just a straight line. They didn’t even try lmao. As a grown man I’d rather walk Rapunzel through the forest again. I’m hard on 2, but I still like it. It has very memorable high moments.
Lmao yeah and that's probably one of my fav worlds tbh.
2 lost a lot of the exploration and platforming from the first one, which is a shame, bcs cavern of remembrance is amazing and there should have been more of that in the base game. Tho the world that never was and hollow bastion are incredible at least, even if t they feel linear too
But for me Kh2 is still better than 1 mainly because how many iconic moments there are

holy s***
you prefer kh3 over 2? Now that's a hot take
Not mad at it, playing it on Critical + Remind is def a good experience and not deserving of the hate it got.
Level design on 2 is really lackluster. Olympus coliseum is so depressing
putting 3+remind over 2fm solely for the data org + yozora fight
2 is prob the better game though

Yozora kicked my ass repeatedly and honestly was just impressed with the whole fight. That ost....

I feel you, but l do find it amusing most of the best things from 2 weren’t even available to most people until like a decade after it came out. Final Mix is a huge improvement and yeah the Cavern of Remembrance is pretty great. None of it tho comes close for me to getting to scale Hollow Bastian in 1 as this like massive intimidating dungeon and all the story moments that come with that.

it's just so cool
makes me so excited for what's coming next
This guy can be a bit corny but I think he perfectly articulates why I prefer KH1. I almost made a video essay like this myself cause I felt so alone. Thankfully he did it for me.

Nah, for sure. Open world games got so trendy that it’s what people came to expect almost. Some production companies treat it like being open world somehow makes your bland game not suck ass.
yea spot on
at this stage of the game, there is no illusion of player freedom since we all know the tricks.
we’re à decade in deep to these s***ty open world games and for every open world game that’s great there’s 15 more that’s awful
on rails can get very boring but in all honesty i’ll take a passionate developer doing an on rails game then another triple a open world game

3 hate is wild to me. Never understood it. I think people are genuinely way too nostalgic about the second one. I’ll give you the Roxas thing. The opening of 2 is brilliant. However the whole adventure after that is just filler most
of the time, even the cool worlds like Timeless River and Space Paranoids are also just flat linear rooms. There’s nothing to do in any of the worlds. The first game by comparison has like a Metroidvania style design, you get new abilities and go back to old worlds and can access new areas. I even like the platforming as clunky as it is. Everything feels so much bigger in that game. Traverse Town alone is so detailed. The story had been dog s*** for a decade so I don’t get why people were so disappointed with 3’s, there was no way to save it at that point. The combat in 3 was mostly as smooth as 2 and the level design was significantly improved. That Toy Story level is one of the best things in the series. I’d rather replay that then go to any world in 2. Imagine wanting to run around Mulan hallways lol.
Mulan hallways
you def makes some good points here. you tried beating the first one on hard tho?
damn near like a Souls game
skimming through it and he make great points, agree with pretty much everything. Need to replay 1
Now that’s it on PC I’m sure mods will smooth out the clunkiness that people say keeps them from revisiting it more often.

That’s what I kinda like about it. Roll, block, hard weighty hits, some magic here and there. Same sort of patterns. It’s got the things I like about Souls games without the tedious draw backs. Like I said I’m being way too hard on 2, it’s still really fun and will always be huge for me. I was in 5th grade when that came out and it was massive for me lol.

I’d go so far as to say that a truly great narrative in gaming needs to be on rails to some extent.
Even a very good game like Ghost of Tsushima suffered from a lack of immersion if you just sort of f***ed off and did side quests.
BioShock came out in 2007. The mechanics were actually pretty great for the time.
I feel like this game is so amazing that people hold it to an impossibly high standard instead of comparing it to other contemporary games at the time.
Like… Halo 3 dropped 2007, and that’s maybe the only shooter at the time that had appreciably greater mechanics than BS, in my opinion.
I think the left hand power-ups are very cool, but the gunplay itself feels just like you're clicking on things, even the original Doom had a better sense of weight to weapons, the worldbuilding in those games is definitely incredible though and I wouldn't say they're bad overall at all
i never thought i’d be one of them niggas but ddadass got gud
lol dude clearly free af in whatever he tried to play.

well said
i feel like we’re a few years away from that dream like vision of a truly free game and i’m sure rockstar will be the ones to do it
but for now i still think an immersive story is the best way to approach video games and like u said it involves a good amount of « hand holding »
i think mgs v against its predecessors is a good example of this tension between a great narrative and great gameplay
it has the best gameplay of the series no doubt but it’s obvious it had to sacrifice a lot of story. a lot of people just blamed it on industry drama and that’s real. but at the same time i don’t think people have enough empathy to the dev team who had to figure out how to make this clunky spy game with tons of lore translate into a modern video game experience. i feel like they did really well with the big expectations.
what’s most interesting about that game is that it actually integrated player choice with narrative with the casssette tapes. it was done really well, it’s obvious why he picked a big movie star and the best voice actors in the industry. the cassettes are really good and have a great incentive to make players find them and listen to them since there’s not many cutscenes. also so many people hated the long cutscenes !
i just don’t think players understand what they really want from video games.

the combat in Bioshock feels awful mostly, you’re def right about that
Infinite combat tho
Halo: CE is/was pinnacle of gaming. Nothing can top the OG Halo
when you first meet the flood
I’d go so far as to say that a truly great narrative in gaming needs to be on rails to some extent.

Can I offer Majora's Mask as a counterpoint?
i never thought i’d be one of them niggas but ddadass got gud
It’s not even like the challenging part is what turns me off though. Like yeah they can be at times of course but I just don’t really find them that entertaining after a while.
Could be just me though
dark souls series are overrated and the only reason they are good is because of the atmosphere and world provided. everything else is mid
