You thought this when the movie first came out and seeing it in theaters?

I said it before but I think I really hate LOTR, and its fans :jordanlaff3:

I hate the way they hold it up as the gold standard.

When I say hate, I still give it its credit as the granddaddy of fantasy genre. It laid the foundation for damn near all the fantasy classics I currently love. But that is really where my love and respect for it ends. That s*** is Golden Age of comics tier writing. Specifically talking about characterization. It’s all 1-dimensional. Characters are flat. Sure they got some mystery to em but eh. It’s more whimsical than mystery imo but I won’t argue that.

It’s like all the adaptations people s*** on, they want 1:1 book adaptions. That’s like asking for 1940s Superman movie to be made today. Nobody wanna see that s***. There is 0 moral quandary when it comes to LOTR

I understand the importance of representation, and equal opportunity, but when people make arguments like for instance right now on my TL some people have a problem with the Bob Marley movie they’re doing. Saying that they wish they got an actual Jamaican to play him. This is where you lose me. It’s acting . Other than the person needing to physically look the part, the notion that you need an actual Jamaican to play Bob Marley is ridiculous to me. Now if the actor they chose can’t do a believable Jamaican accent then that’s just bad casting.

This is partly why I think actors & actresses going forward should be bilingual at minimum. One it expands their range, and depending on the language it can extend their careers if they so choose. Actors should be putting in the work to learn these dialects if the role is calling for it.

Is that not part of acting or not?

Should Rick Grimes have been played by a real man born and raised in Georgia?

What about period pieces? Even if they’re portrayed by their ancestors they’re not them. Mfs is losing the plot

If there was a Jamaican actor out there that could do the role (which I’m probably sure there is) then they should be given a chance. I just don’t think that should be top priority tbfh. If someone else is better at imitating the person, then they should do it

I'll take it a step further: LOTR is a major reason why modern fantasy shows are so stale and boring for the most part. There's so much you can do in that space beyond what the apparent gold standard did. I watched the extended versions, and liked all 3, but it's time to move past the Tolkien influences.

most ur takes jus read like pro-meritocracy for the sake of being anti-DEI. like ight if its an accent, sure theres dialect coaches for that. but when a role calls for portrayal where culture and race are crucial aspects of a character i dont see why prioritizing actors who viscerally know what thats about is an issue

I’m not anti-DEI at all. I understand the need for it, and its actual function. I just think the way “diversity” is implemented in the entertainment industry is very superficial.

As far as cultural portrayals, if the main opportunity I get is to more or less play myself, how is that even called acting? All this s*** is pretend, I think people taking the arts way too serious for their own good. The last 2 episodes of The Studio really hit it on the head imo.

superficial cus uninformed executives without vision are at the helm of these projects. u fix an implementation problem by hiring creatives with a vision for their inclusive storytelling, not by denouncing diversity awareness as something that needs to be abandoned. the period accurate casting of sinners reflects how this can be done well

it feels like ure either being obtuse or reductive about culture cus there's more to that than just "playing yourself" which isn't as easy as u think. steve mcqueen intentionally cast second gen Black londoners for his small axe series about caribbean immigrants in that city, i'd be a fool to act like none of those actors' lived experiences added anything to their portrayal of historical figures.

there's a difference between profit incentivized nonBlacks overthinking a kool-aid commerical and writers being thoughtful about racial semiotics. the decades of negative reinforced stereotypes we got from artists who don't take s*** "too serious" is way worse than what we've got when they do

There’s nuance in everything. I’m not against a film like Small Axes, basically all I’m saying is those same 2nd generation black Londoner’s should be given more opportunities to play roles that aren’t tied to their irl culture and identity. (By tied to the culture I mean the subject of the film itself being the culture )

It’s like the main way to greenlight “black” films is for it to be a biopic. How often are we getting a Attack the Block, Us, They Cloned Tyrone, Candyman, etc?

It’s the most recent season. S1-2 have good episodes here and there but was still finding its footing. S3 been the most consistently good so far.

but they do. boyega and letitia wright have had storied careers thus far, im not mad at that. however your point about greenlighting again jus goes back to the question of who are the nonBlack executives that get to decide how we represent ourselves? and when we get the chance to, its up to the filmmakers whether they'd rather center cultural accuracy to enrich their work or if they're more comfortable betting on pale imitations of it

Wouldnt go that far but I have seen some absolute classics on my phone and it worked.

If the movie is good, it will pull you in, no matter where you watching it
