It's not ageism. Majority of rap listeners and rappers are young people. For a genre with a demographic like that, 33 is an old head. It's like in soccer where players who are in their 30s are considered old.

Tyler's opinion is an old head opinion that's been said in every generation of rap. If I played CMIYGL for some dude who thinks 90s rap is the truest form of rap they'd call it garbage and say tyler not a real artist/musician/rapper.

Just because this generations way of making rap doesn't allign with your belief/views on how people should approach the genre doesn't mean there's no real musicianship.

Tyler's opinion isn't him being an oldhead he's just always been elitist / pretentious

He's legit been the same since 2011

“It's not for people like Tyler”

So can you tell me why he and people older then him are the only ones still doing numbers?

Why can’t any of these kids hold onto a career for more then a couple years?

    They not gonna like this.

Tyler is an old head (33 years old) and old heads in every generation of rap has had the same opinion as tyler on new rappers and the state of rap music. KTT is old head status so I see why you and alot of others here agree strongly with his opinion.

The fact is rap has always been for the youth. It's not for people like Tyler and most people on this site anymore. The kids are gonna get inspired and identify with the rap that's coming out nowdays and the cycle will repeat once they get older. To deny there's any musicianship because it doesn't allign with your beliefs/views on the art form just shows you are dusty.

I dont think this is it tbh

The music landscape is so much different now than when Tyler and other older artists came into the game. They had time to build a foundation and fanbase, which artists nowdays don't really have anymore.

The streaming era and now tiktok era really f***ed things up. People come and go way faster now because of how much content is being demanded, produced and consumed.

Why aren't there anymore superstars like Michael Jackson? Have artists and music fallen off so badly that no one can do the same numbers and have the same reach and longevity as MJ?

    This is a different discussion

What said before still isn’t making any sense. You said 33 is old and kids don’t connect to that but that’s objectively not true because the biggest artists in the genre are almost 30 or 30+

  • Aug 13, 2024

You also just can’t solely blame the internet

Artists are still the ones making the music and releasing it. It’s their choice to not put the effort in

while i generally get your point, i gotta disagree on that last statement…

discrediting someone who is (in some way) very talented and successful just because they might not share the same passion as you do is crazy. it doesn’t mean that they can’t make “good“ music or music a lot of people enjoy. you are clearly talking from an emotional standpoint here. motivation does not always equal outcome. meaning: someone who doesn’t give a f*** can still make a “better“ song than someone who does. that’s just how life works and i don’t think that should be what determines who gets to make music and who doesn’t. it should just determine whether you will support said artist or not. nothing more and nothing less.

Yeah, thats a fundamental disagreement then. Cause i believe the opposite

in my opinion, if youre making art purely for fiscal gain and youre proud of it, its gonna show in some way.

whether its through trash music, pretentious persona, or lack of respect for art as a whole etc. Passion is intregal to truly great art. Cause theres so much time that has to be put in. Natural talent can only take you so far. The painstaking practice, efforts, and sacrifices that have to be made to make truly great works cant be done by someone who just wants a quick buck.

I feel like ice spice is great neutral example

She has natural talent and charisma and had genuinely good songs and verses, but doesnt seem to be willing to practice and challenge herself artistically. Doesnt really seem to find joy in the craft for the crafts sake, and doesnt try to be like that either nor does she speak on anything. and thats fine.

Its a problem when one tries to be a torch bearer and speak for "the culture" in any way, or try to act like they have speaking room on music when they arent nerds about it. we cant let that slide

Destroy lonely goes into the studio and pumps out 200 one take fast food tracks and hopes one of them will stick

Yes odd future were having fun but they put effort and intention into what they were doing

so creating 200 songs with the intention of at least one of them going viral isn’t an effort?

this is my problem with these threads cause people always pick and choose when, where and most importantly whom they appoint certain attributes/intentions to

making 200 songs (whether you like them or not) is quite literally an effort that is just a fact. and hoping that one of them goes viral is an intention, too.

neither criticism you have applies here. so what’s even your point?

he makes music i don’t like so he shouldn’t be successful?

what happened to letting niggas do whatever they want and if you don’t rock with it you simply ignore it?

Tyler thinks because he knows what a chord progression is and tossed a group of violinists in a room he can start looking down on the genre that made him. He has a history of this weird elitist mentality - by far the most obnoxious musician.

Tyler is right a lot of these niggas just see rap as a quick cash grab/hustle and a way to gain clout. A lot of these niggas don't care about music and has said so.

Yeah thats why the rappers selling the most are all 30+

    Stupid, outdated, regurgitated ageist opinion

Making 200 songs with all the same intentions behind them, hoping one of them will stick, has the same effort as an insurance salesman going door to door, hoping someone will buy insurance from them, even though they don't believe in the product.

There's effort, but there's also 0 respect for the artform, 0 craftsmanship.
