This site is so ahistorical sometimes

Artists that are responsible for crossover success always get flagged as some nadir in the genre

This is as corny as hating the Beatles.

The dude made a lot of really good pop-rap and he got an exceptionally large fan base because of it.

Was he a trailblazer? To my ears yeah, he invented a lot of s***, but your mileage may vary

okay, mine had like 90% white kids, and let me tell you, a lot more were listening to rap & downloading mixtapes from datpiff than you’d think

it’s that weird trying to be hard thing they do

I didn’t experience white kids like this until 2015/2016 with SoundCloud so idk, the white kids who was like that (which was like 1 or 2) were actually banging/serving and in/out of jail lol. most white people I knew before that were unironically bumping LMFAO

As a white kid who grew up in the suburbs I was definitely on datpiff from 08-13

tell me about the suburban white kids you know that was on DatPiff in 2012 bruh, I’d love to hear it, cause I’ve never met them. they was always late to the hiphop trend

I don't know man we were too poor to have internet when I was a kid and then I was grinding off the grid for that whole '06-'12 era so I just bought physicals and missed alot of deep cuts. Surprisingly you could still find Wayne mix tapes up in Canada when he was peaking.

There was one kid in high school I used to pay 5 bucks to track down and burn a list of songs I needed so he was locked in during the early Napster era.

I mean he featured Jay Z, Q-Tip, and some Wu-Tang guys. They were all doing fine without Cruel Summer lmao. Jay was still at the height of his commercial powers.

It doesn't matter how they were doing. Where am I talking about that? He always loved NY rap because thats his foundation and him showing love at the peak of his career definitely mattered for most of these artists besides Jay probably

  • Ulyanov_

    Mase was doing fine too

I haven't listened to Cruel Summer in ages

Mase and R.Kelly were surprising ass features lol both were way past it and not active in rap anymore. Mase was a dinosaur atp

how tf is kanye responsible for watering down the sound of hiphop production?

the white hipsters would have come regardless of who was on top at the time. thats what happens when s*** gets mainstream. u get white hipsters.

the Maga s*** is stupid and a stain on his legacy, as is the nazism s*** but none of that is really relevant to what we’re talking abt ur just dumping anti-kanye talking points lol. im not even jacking kanye like that i haven’t liked his music since TLOP lol. i just think its stupid to say he’s somehow responsible for the gentrification of rap, something that would have inevitably happened, regardless of who was #1 when hiphop became dominant in pop culture.

but u rly tried to sneak that stupid s*** in between those points how tf is kanye responsible for watering down the production in hip hop wtf??

the maga/nazi s*** is not divorced from the gentrification at all

how can you be this blind

I don't care that he sampled world famous white artists. His sampling was just lazy as f***. Dre is a genuine elite craftsman as a producer, Diddy's just a CEO.

Exactly and he did his best to simplify the music for/market to whites

lol on some s*** i actually knew a white kid in my highschool who was posting tapes on datpiff. this was like 2017 tho

  • Ulyanov_

Yes but did Kanye contribute to this phenomenon, and how much more severe did the gentrification become due to his contributions? It's a worthwhile question considering his status in pop culture.

What does that even mean? Why would it become more severe? LR has crack music on it.

You could make all these same arguments about any artist that rose to his level of success

  • NWA, Snoop, Pac, BIG, DMX, 50, Eminem, Wayne, Kanye

All those guys contributed to white rap fans coming over. By the time Kanye arrived it was mostly white already lol

did you think the Dreamchasers 2 numbers on DatPiff was all from black people?

  • Guarantee you when that “we want Eazy” song dropped. It wasn’t the black fans they were thinking about when the hook starts screaming “Eazy!!” 😂

Bro gentrification is not an explicitly racialized issue. White people have been gentrified out of their own neighborhoods by other white people.

I think another effect of hip-hop gentrification is fashion. Back in the day rappers were relatable they rapped about driving a Ford in Fubu now it’s AMG’s in Dior

?? its completely irrelevant. kanye has done some bad things and endorsed bad people but this didn’t make the eventual gentrification and dissolution of hip hop as we knew it any more or less inevitable. Rap music was already well on its way to being #1 in the world by the time Kanye started pushing maga s***, and it going #1 in the world is why it became gentrified. what kanye did or said doesn’t matter it was going to happen anyway. genuinely need u to articulate ur point better because u aren’t making sense.
