The word "underground" is going out like "indie"

    I don’t really feel like this new “ug” scene has any actual tenets of the word “underground” though. It’s not outside of the mainstream, it’s not anti establishment. Even if it once was, those things were never the main point of the scene, which is why I feel like it could have used a better term. Even “new wave” would have been better than underground because underground carries some social and potentially political implications imo

    Why is it so hard for niggas to come up with new names for s*** instead of trying to swallow/replace old subgenres lol

    Same thing for carti uzi yachty travis etc being the new de facto big 3 and it killing off drake kendrick kanye jay wayne tier actual mainstream rap artists under 25

    The reason we call dudes like che or osamason underground is because that scene WAS niche but it became the dominant sound

    Changing the name would be confusing but im not against that idea

  • I agree with you on words evolving to mean how people use them, but I don't interact with anybody irl that listens to Ken Carson and them so underground to me and my circle still means MIKE and them

    I think the way most people use “underground” refers to the scene of rappers that then inhabit rage, pluggnb, and generally post-Carti/Lucki/Uzi sounds

    Notice how “underground” generally doesn’t refer to up-and-comers outside of that strain of rappers (Cash Cobain, Veeze, etc) but will inhabit artists on the less-hiphop inclined side of Carti’s influence (Lucy Bedroque, Jane)

    It’s just definitionally not what that word means, this isn’t a genre name it’s a word that has always been about status. It became associated with a sound that popped but not to a massive degree. Kendrick was underground once
